I love Grandma Kim's. I have never ordered anything here that was not delicious. The service is great as well. I have had the spicy seafood noodle soup on a number of occasions--absolutely delicious (and HUGE!). The Korean BBQ (not AYCE--they cook it for you and bring it on a hot platter) is very tasty and the japchae is good (they have both an appetizer size and a large size you can order as an entree with meat of your choice). The vegetable pancakes (think latkes for the uninitiated) are excellent. This is also the restaurant where I learned to like Kimchi. :) The bibimbap is very, very good here. As good as any you will find in Koreatown. This should be a 5-star review, but I have deducted one star because when you use a restaurant.com or groupon-type voucher here, they automatically add 18% gratuity to the bill. I am not an idiot. I know to tip on the full regular amount of the food bill before the discount. And even if I were, it specifically tells you to do so in large print on every restaurant.com certificate. Adding the tip to the bill is both presumptuous. They are assuming I would have tipped that much. What if the service or the food was terrible? Of course, neither is (ever) an issue here, but adding the tip to the bill is just rude as hell and pisses me off anywhere they do it (even for large parties--why should that make a difference?). Once, at a fancy Italian place, they added the tip to the bill, and while the food was good, the service was absolutely terrible--it took 40 minutes for our dinner to arrive. I crossed it out and left an appropriate tip reflecting the poor service instead. Tipping is a choice--it is up to the customer, and you have to earn it. Not that I am worried at Grandma Kim's--the service here has always been very good (and friendly too). If you have never been, go--it is worth it (a little pricey--dinner for two will easily eclipse $45). If you have an issue with my comments about the automatic gratuity, that's nice, but I don't care. I understand the restaurant wants to make sure they get tipped appropriately. And if they earn it, they will. Unfortunately, by adding 18% to the bill, they are cheating themselves out of an extra 2-7% (I normally tip 20-25% if the service is good). I love Grandma Kim's, but I decide how much to tip, thank you very much.

Their food actually is pretty decent for a Korean restaurant in the valley. It is however, very over priced and the portions are very small especially if you order Korean bbq. For 17.99 I got 6 pieces of marinated short ribs with bone included of course on a bed of onions. Reduce the onions and include more meat! 6 Pieces are like 2 slabs of ribs at least give 9 pieces or 3 slabs of short ribs. With tax it is like 3 pieces for $10. A 5 year old girl could eat 6 pieces of short ribs and still not be full.

The food was excellent, cost affordable and the staff was delightful. This is a must to place if your in LA. OMG! The green tea ice cream Rocks! Your tummy says Yummy!

Hidden Korean paradise in the valley! Delicious authentic Korean flavor. I'm Asian. I should know. LOL. From sides to main dishes... YUMMY!

I'm always on the look out for great Korean food and I've found it at Grandma Kim's. My favorite dish is the kimchi hot pot. I'm not normally a fan of spicy nor vinegar, but this soup really hits the spot. It's not overly spicy, where you don't taste anything but fire nor is it bland and flavorless. Their kimchi pancakes are also delicious. My family and I have liked everything we've tried: pan-fried noodles, bibimbap, bul go gi, etc. The staff is also friendly and willing to enlighten you on new dishes. The portions are family size, so come expecting to share with friends or have leftovers.

Food was good but way overpriced. $18 for one person. I could find a great Korean spot with the same dishes all you can eat for that price. Nice people though.

It was our 2nd time here today. My husband and I both think that this is one of the best authentic korean food around. He normally gets the LA galbi. A couple of bites of that with dumplings and all the little snacks we got served was more than enough to fill me up. It's a nice looking place and the service is decent.

This used to be one of my favorites in the Valley. A couple of years ago, new management took over and the food just wasn't the same. Grandma Kim might be flipping over in her grave. It's been some time since I've been back, hopefully my next visit will prove me wrong.

I give this place a thumbs up! The service is great and the food is always delicious! When I don't want ACYE korean bbq, this is the place to go! The seafood pancakes are too die for!

  • Amanda N.

The pancakes here are the best I ever had!! Went here with the boyfriend's family. We had the BBQ ribs, seafood ramen, beef ramen, and marinated pork. The beef ramen was just right, not overly spiced. Soo yummy! And the kimchi is usually a tell of whether or not the cook has good taste...and it was delicious. Nice and tangy and spicy!!! Definitely will come back!

We've been going to Grandma Kim's for a few years now, and we love it there. We've had a chance to talk with quite a bit of the staff, and they are just awesome. The food is delicious, and as we make our way through the menu, the boolgogi hot pots seem to be our favorite. The diner itself is small and comfy, intimate and very family friendly. Love that people have left drawings on the menus that adorn their walls. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to try out something a little different.

I thought the name of this place is interesting as one would be enticed by eating Grandma's food right? We even inquired as to whom Grandma Kim is, but sadly, she has passed on and is named in memory of her. We felt like celebrities as we were definitely the only ones in the restaurant. However, don't let that deter you from coming here as the food here is quite comparable to other restaurants in the LA area. If you live in this area, you are in for a treat. We ordered their combination special of the kalbi ribs and the cold noodle. Also, we ordered the dol sot bi bim bap. In addition, the dishes came with the requisite side dishes. In all, everything was pretty good and reasonably priced. If you are craving Korean food in the Valley, you can get your fix here.

This place is alright. I think the decor is kinda funky but cute. The food's portions are kinda small and expensive for what it is and I always feel shunned when I ask for more of the little side dishes, which are bomb :( Service was therefore sorta lacking. I prefer BCD Tofuhouse, which is a few more streets down, but preferred by me!

I wanted to like you Grandma Kim. You have an adorable name, homey decor, a delightful host and waiters who constantly check on us and ensure our banchans are full and happy. You have the makings for a great food experience especially considering there aren't many Korean restaurants around the area - you could dominate my love for Korean food and not make me trek out to KTown. But the food just wasn't up to par...What happened Grandma? Were you having an off day? Are they slaving you too much in the back kitchen and you forgot to add some seasoning and love to the food? The chicken bulgogi was well...not very bulgogi-ish. No flavor Grandma. The bi bim bap was a bit sad to me - limp veggies, oily soggy rice. I wanted that crispy bottom but nope. Kimchee was just sour without any spicy goodness. And potato soup? Huh. No. Your saving grace is all the smiles we were greeted with and enthusiastic Thank Yous as we left. I just wish the food matched everything else.

We have been here maybe a dozen times in the past year or so, and drive 20 minutes to do so. Not up there with the tops in Koreatown but very good and reliable. Food comes piping hot (soup nearly at a boil) -- always seems fresh and made with care. I do miss the at-table barbecues of K-town, but Grandma Kim's barbecued meats are tender and delicious. Try the specials: barbecue pork with a tofu hot pot, or the barbecue chicken on a stick with kimchi hot pot. About $14. The traditional complimentary small plates (banchan) could be a bit more generous, but that's quibbling. They are open late (10 during the week; 11 weekends at this writing). Service is great -- friendly but not chatty. ESPN on most of the time. No grandmothers in sight, however.

Had a $25 restaurant.com coupon. Wow! One of the best Korean BBQ places my fiancé and I have ever been to! Coming back ASAP! Yum!

I'm a valley ex-pat, but family still lives on the westside of the 818. I would drive by this place all the time over the past 5 years and never got a chance to go until today. I really wanted to like this place cause it has such a cute name. I got the kalbi combo with fried dumpling. 1.) one of the dumplings was not cooked all the way. Luckily I cut them all open to see that there was raw pork. 2.) the serving of kalbi was soo weak sauce. They gave me 4 small ribs. Are you serrrsssious???!! 3.) the kalbi was cooked poorly, as in the meat was placed on a "warm" grill. There was not grill marks or crisp caramelized egdes. The meat was just brown. 4.) The kimchi tasted store bought. 5.) My water was never refilled. Poor value for the money spent.

Huge bummer because the food was delicious, but the service awful. We ordered the vegetable pancake, bibimbap and bulgogi hot pot. Really enjoyed the ban chan. The woman serving us/running the place already seemed harassed when we came in, and waved us vaguely toward a table. After she took our order, after we were seated for several minutes, we didn't see her again until the end. There was a fairly helpful gentleman running the food, and occasionally refilling water, but that was about it. I made the mistake of not specifying which size pancake appetizer we wanted, but she also didn't ask, and I believe we were brought the large size, which is somewhat ridiculous to just assume for two people. I also say I BELIEVE we were brought/charged for the large size, because at the end of the meal (and then some) she brought us the wrong check. I flagged down the male food runner, and he had her come over, we explained it wasn't our order, that there were two appetizers, an entree and a drink vs our actual order of one appetizer, two entrees and no drinks. She returned with the bill again with just the drink taken off. Ok, we thought.. the cost seemed the same or close to the same so assuming she knew what she was doing, my boyfriend gave her his card. She returned with the PAID bill, and said that she gave us the wrong check and it was actually an extra "3 dollars - 3 or 4 dollars" that we owed. What. Super done at this point having been given the wrong check three times, he dropped a $5 on the table and we left. I would really like to come back here for the (yes, overpriced) food, but our experience was soured for sure.

I normally drive out to the Reseda area for Korean food (I live in Woodland Hills). Tonight I decided to give Grandma Kim's a try. I came in around 10pm and it was nearly empty with just one party of 3 in the restaurant. Normally, this would make me nervous. We were greeted by the owner(Richard). I was impressed with the menu's variety. There were noodle dishes, bbq dishes, dumplings, etc. I ordered the bulgogi and a diet coke. Richard brought to the table the usual condiments...kimchi, bean sprouts, potato salad, etc A couple of minutes later, my bulgogi arrived and I started eating. It was a very satisfying meal that surpassed my expectations considering the time of the night and the area I was in, which is not known for restaurants being open very late on a Thursday night. The meat was very flavorful, tender and lean. Afterwards, Richard spent time speaking with us about the restaurant, the state of Korean AYCE BBQ concepts and a handful of other interesting topics. Just a fun way to end our evening. I will definitely come back and recommend this place to anyone who wants good Korean food.

I'm not sure what Korean food would taste like in one's traditional korean home.. but to me.. This place feels nice and homey. My bf and I used our restaurant.com coupon ($25 off $40 with 18% gratuity) We still ended up spending about $36 here out of pocket. The beef ribs were good. Seafood pancake was a little too crispy for my liking. Boolgogi hot pot just tasted like beef sukiyaki. The place is on the pricy side but there is nothing to complain about other than that no one was really attentive and we had to go hunt them down for the check :) Verdict: -Will be back when I'm craving Korean food thats not AYCE KBBQ. -A-OK from me

This was our second visit and they were very consistent the food was very bland and the service left a lot to be desire. If you don't know Korean food forget bout it because there are no suggestions from the staff and the side dishes are just thrown at you and they look like they've been just sitting around not a great place to have a meal

    (1)
  • Kate M.

Great food and great service. The portions are large and the prices are reasonable. We had the bulgogi, kimchi hot pot, and pot stickers. It was enough to last for two days and will still excellent as leftovers. I felt like it was a little pricey, but I will definitely be going back.

Fantastic family restaurant. Great authentic Korean food. I m usually so stuffed after eating there, I have to nap. Great service, friendly atmosphere. I'll be back, often

This is the best Korean BBQ I've had yet!! Delicious!! I've been here 2-3xs and have not been disappointed. Friendly service but definitely a wait, worth it! I would recommend to all.

This is the best tofu place I've been too. I thought O.tofu was great but Grandma Kim's is just in a class of its own.

After coming here from Camarillo, I realized this place is Korean food for white people. The food was okay, but in general if you just drive 20 miles towards K-town, you will get significantly better food and better service too. Not to be racially insensitive but yeah, I'm really tired of going to asian food restaurants that get 5 stars just because most of the reviewers aren't asian and have nothing to compare to. After reading a few other reviews, I agree... Where's the Grandma?!

So I had a restaurant.com gift cert and have seen this place before so I figured I would give it a shot. I invited my sister and my best friend out to what I figured would be a five star meal on me. It didn't take five minutes for me to want to leave but I stuck it out and gave them the benefit of a doubt. The restaurant was clean but had a smell to it. I ordered the spicy chicken skewers, and my chicken was full of fat and gristle meat. Seemed like they bought the cheapest meat for a very expensive meal. My sister went to order the spicy spare ribs which everyone raves about on here. The waitress basically said she wouldn't like it and to order the spicy pork that it was better... Hmmmm.. And with really no explanation why. Service was very very slow. The lady's were not very friendly nor did they try and explain the menu even though they asked if we had ever eaten there and we said no. We all ate as much as we could, I didn't finish my meal due to the chicken. They never even asked if we needed anything else and left us the bill. I placed the restaurant.com certificate along with my credit card to pay. When the lady arrived to take our payment she looked at the certificate and had a very disgusting look of disappointment. She then stated, She must add 18% tip to our meal due to the gift certificate. At this point I was surprised. I'm not a cheap tipper, I always give at the least 20%. We explained to her, we were already planning on leaving a nice tip and she walked away. We were going to leave a 20 dollar tip and instead we had no choice because she already charged our card for the balance of our bill, and her 18% tip she demanded. Very bad experience, rude folks, soup was cold. I'm never going back! Sorry!

Cleaness of this place is questionable. I found a dead fly in kimchi and all we got was 50% off the bill. I don't care if I eat there for free. I'm not going back, ever.

  • Gail J.

We love you Grandma Kim. You make one spicy pot full of kimchi, mushrooms, and egg! For 8.99, I received a piping hot cast iron vessel full of ridiculous tastiness. This was not so hot as to burn my mouth with either flavor or temperature, but just right. This is the stuff that Goldlilocks would never throw shade at... And the whole assortment of Korean tastiments that come ante meal are addictive. They placed a Wanted Poster of me on the wall and threw me out after round 8. Actually, they're way too polite for those shenanigans. Next time, they'll probably just throw the CLOSED sign on the door and save a few sprouts for the other customers.

Terrible I walked in on a Saturday at 10:30 pm and they said they close at 11pm. Don't advertise falsely I wouldn't come back ever!

After eating here tonight, all I can imagine is a kitchen full of old korean grandmas hunched over some hot coals in preparation for the next meal. It's almost enough to break a grown Korean man's heart. Almost. Muahaha! Haha I'm just kidding. I'm not so cruel. If I knew Grandma Kim's was an elaborate cover up for coercing Korean senior citizens into pumping out authentic Korean dishes, I wouldn't support it! But seeing as how Grandma Kim's is more mom and pop than "Grandma" and grandpa, I'll let it slide. It's a bit on the pricey side, but if you use a restaurant.com certificate, it should even out. Gary A. and I got the appetizer sampler ($12.99) with "Kimchi Pancakes" and "Fried Dumplings". I would probably reorder the pancakes (thick and crispy but not overpowered by kimchi), but take a pass on the dumplings. I also ordered the bbq combination ($16.99) with "Spicy Pork Spare Ribs" and "LA Galbi" (korean bbq beef short ribs). I finished both to the bone. Also, I mentioned to our server that I found them on yelp and he even let me keep my $25 restaurant.com gift cert to use another time! Go mahp sup ni da!

Ive lived around the corner from this place for years and finally went in the try it. I've been back numerous times lets just say. The tofu hot pot is outrageous. I don't know how they cook it but they must use lava, if you get a to go order it'll still be piping hot when you get home. The Kali short ribs are amazing. The dumplings are amazing. All around good food.

    (5)
  • Danielle B.

The service can be a bit on the slow side, so make sure you've got plenty of time to relax, eat and enjoy! Sometimes Grandma Kim herself is at the restaurant. Well, A Grandma Kim, maybe not THE Grandma Kim.

We made a pit stop here on our way home a few months back it was every thing we hoped for in a Korean restaurant .. A bit late on my review but I'm playing catch up , why ? Because it deserves a good word and I can appreciate when a meal is well executed ..cheers grandma Kim we will be back

Once in a while I have a craving for Korean food, but don't care to drive very far to get it. This restaurant has always been on the way home from work for me. I have been coming to Grandma Kim's off and on for several years now. The food is good, and they have always treated us pretty well each time we ate there. My recommendation would be to get the dinner combination. My favorite is the spicy pork with the hot tofu soup. It comes with rice and the assorted vegetables. You can enjoy your food with beer and/or sake too! There have been some mixed reviews of this restaurant, but I have no issues here, so I will continue to be a regular diner here... Enjoy the Kim Chi!

  • Joni S.

Pros: The doorbell system for each table. Used to be a restaurant.com participant. Even if they're busy and understaffed, they're efficient. You know it's good when other Koreans travel across the Valley for work lunch. Cons: No AYCE. They changed their tofu hot pot by removing beef. Tip: Best tofu hot pot ever but ask them to add beef if you're familiar with the original.

I always have a soft spot for elderly asians. Wait...that sounds wrong... :l Anyway, this is my favorite Korean joint in the valley. I get the herbal knee bone soup with ginseng, jujubes, ginkgo, and antler, and rely on the ban chan to round out my belly. Happiness. Never met Grandma Kim but the husband and wife running this spot are awesome. They make me feel like I'm an honorary Kim every time. :)

  • Jenn H.

I'm angry that I haven't tried this place sooner! Service is wonderful, very friendly and attentive. The kim chee has the right amount of kick and plenty of flavor. The tofu hot pot is amazing and they are generous on the tofu. I've tried the bulgogi and the BBQ chicken which were both excellent. My other must have is the vegetable pancake. It's amazing. Everything about this place is amazing.

  • Ilya B.

I'm not Korean and don't really eat Korean food very often. I gave it a try and wasn't very satisfied. My to go order was over $20 for ONE entree the size of regular Chinese Lunch Special. I don't mind paying good money for good food, but what I've got was just your average $6.99-$8.00 food ... I actually felt ripped off when I saw and tasted what they gave me for my $20. You can order something like grilled pork chops or other meat for $10-$12 at other restaurants and they will give you a huge bag of food that not every person can even carry home, much less likely to finish it all alone. Tried it, didn't get anything special ... Won't go there again. It seemed like I wasn't the only one like that, the restaurant was literally empty when I came by to pick up my order and it was evening.

A great place for Korean bbq. Lunch specials are reasonably priced, food is delicious and the place is large and quiet. It's in the same strip mall I eat at a Pho and local diner which are also excellent.

  • S S.

Okay, these guys make their own kimchi, and let me tell you, you haven't had killer awesome delectable kimchi until you have been here. And the kimchi pancakes are a resounding MUST. OMG. The staff here are as kind and generous as can be. I love this place.

  • Sharon C.

The seafood pancakes and dol sot bibimbap are pretty good. The tofu soup is not that flavorful. They are kinda cheap with the side dishes. They are brought out with the food, not before. They give you only a little and need to keep asking for refills.

This is now our favorite place to go to enjoy Korean food in Canoga Park! I eat often in K town, but this place is definitely a good place to go eat especially when I get work done late at night before I go home!

  • Sean M.

Great food. Great service. Great atmosphere. The dishes are well portioned and they don't skimp on anything. Price is very fair for what you get. Would love to return. Not too loud (which I love), so if you want to be loud, go elsewhere

    (5)
  • Julie L.

Disappointed... I haven't been here in a while after the owner changed. The Nang Myun (cold noodles) was their signature item, but the broth flavor changed and the food flavors in general got bad. I guess Grandma Kim's touch mattered a lot. The owner is definitely nice and serve is good, but the food disappointed me too much to return. I had the whole kimchi stew. It was average, a little too sweet for my taste. I guess I'll have to go to LA for my Korean food cravings...

I went here with a colleague after work last week. I had the spicy pork and kimchee stir fry and she had the spicy pork bbq and kimchee chigae combination. We also had the seafood pancake for an appetizer. Okay, so I'll start with the 'eh' parts and move to the better points. The side dishes were just okay. I noticed they use the side dishes that generally keep longer, I'm guessing because the turn-over is not too high. So it wasn't the fresh side dishes you generally find in high traffic restaurants in K-town. But it was still decent nevertheless. My kimchee and pork fry was just average. The portion was small, the kimchee too al dente, and not enough pork belly. My friend said her kimchee chigae was good and I tried some of her spicy pork bbq. It was marinated well, but the pork pieces were too small in my opinion. Now, the best part of this meal was the seafood pancake. It was absolutely divine. I've tried many seafood pancakes in my life and this is probably the best I've ever had. I will come back here over and over again just for the seafood pancake. It's that good. It's crispy, yet chewy in the inside, the seafood bits are cooked just right, and the presentation is unique (four small pancakes rather than one large pizza looking one). That one dish alone made my stomach very VERY happy. Please come try the seafood pancake... it will change your life. Yes, i said it... like those other crazy yelpers out there... it will literally change your life. haha. Well, maybe not, but it comes damn close.

Good place for Korean BBQ in chatsworth. I think the only one in the area. The place may need a little redecoration but the food was good along with the service.

I used to go to this place all the time. The changed ownership about a year or so. Since then it has not been as good. Still, it's the closest non-Korean BBQ joint to me and it's still pretty good. The service here is kind of slow. Besides the husband and wife owners there is usually only one other waitress. On most nights it's not a big deal, but when it's crowded, it's impossible to flag someone down. The food is good. They must have purchased all the recipes because everything still tastes the same. My favorites are the soondubu and yukejang. My wife loves the BBQ - Kalbi and Bulgogi. The kids love the fried mandoo. I would also recommend the seafood pancakes, duk mandu guk & dolsot bibimbap.

I absolutely love this place, the tastiest kbbq on the west side of the valley. Portion size isn't as much as you would probably get at a kbbq restaurant but they sure make up for it in taste! (and your side dishes; potato salad is amazing my gf loves it so much they always give us 2 large mini dishes) the owners are very personable don't be surprise if they ask you how your food? what do u think? They love listening to their customers! Huge plus! Lunch special here would probably be the best time for the person who hasn't been here before, just so you can test out the dishes for a great price.. I recommend the galbi short ribs and japcha (glass noodles) Dinner: a great buy for a dinner for 2 would be the "2 for 1 combo" you pick 2 different sides of meat from galbi, bogogi, chicken.. The bogogi hot pot has a nice sweet taste to it too!

If you read some of the reviews I would agree with what they are saying. I do not like be duped for a fool and the portions are very misleading. The sizzling plates that they bring out are unacceptable. They load them with so much onions and there is no meat. I think they reckon that most will not know about it but it has stopped me from coming here and will most likely not come back. There is better to be had in the valley. Others have also noted the sub par portion size. If you like paying $$ for onions then by all means pay them a visit.

I like this place. I came here twice. My first time visiting here was back in 2007, but then I went back in January this year. I'm glad they were still in business. I ate seafood pancake, bbq pork, dumpling & rice cake soup, and they were all delicious. But little pricey for korean food.

I love this place!!! My boyfriend and I have been coming here for years and it is the only Korean BBQ place in the SFV that we really like. They don't have the all you can eat KBBQ but regardless their food is really good. They give big portions and before you get your main course your already full off of their side dishes which I may say Their Potato Salad is the best I have ever had. I always ask for seconds LOL! I must say that when we first started going here about 4-5 years ago they weren't as busy but their food has tasted just as good as when I first came. The owners and staff are really nice! We have gotten to know them through small conversations whenever we come. I highly recommend this place and forsure I will continue to be their regular customer.

I went to this restaurant twice. I had seafood pancake, Tofu hot pot, and Chap Jae. The service was just ok. Not rude but not kind either. Seafood pancake: crispy and very delicious. Tofu hot pot: no taste and it is a real tofu hot pot. Except Tofu there is nothing in the soup. Chap Jae: the noodle itself is well cooked. However, the season is off. Too sweet and the taste is plain. The ingredients in Chap Jae are weird: zucchini and white mushroom. It is my first time to have Chap Jae without black mushroom. The place is overpriced. , Small Seafood Pancake + Tofu hot pot =18 dollars Small Seafood Pancake + Chap Jae = 20 dollars P.s: Chap Jae is in the appetizer category;; therefore, rice dose not come with it. I don't mind there is no meat in Chap Jae. The problem is that Chap Jae costs around 10 dollars. If you see the picture that someone posted on Yelp, you can decide whether it is worth.

To sum it up in a word its "Awful" The major disappointment was the meat portions on the Korean BBQ plates. Its deceiving at first because like other Korean bbqs it comes out looking like a nice sized meat plate. The problem....the plate is 75% onions under the meat cover. First thing I asked the waitress when we got there was "are the meat portions good ?" and she quickly replied "yes". Well, if you call a plate of onions with a side of meat a Korean BBQ meat plate then that would be correct. The bottom line is that this restaurant is sub par compared to the other korean restaurants in the valley when it comes to taste and portions of everything you normally get at a Korean BBQ. Nuff said!

We had kimchee jige, pajun and broiled fish for our lunch yesterday. At first banchan came while we're waiting. I like this part of Korean food. It's like salsa and chips in Mexican restaurant. You don't have to be more hungry while you're waiting for your food. Some Korean restaurants give you not so fresh banchans, so you better remember what kinda banchan you liked. Anyway what we had were all good. If you go to a restaurant for food not for other stuffs, Grandma Kim's is good for you.

The food we were served had an odd taste and seemed to be slightly out of date. I've had korean food before, but in this case, some of the food tasted rancid as did the sauce served.

This place is my hands-down fall-back place if I'm craving Korean food nearby. I had the pleasure of being the foodie sherpa for a few close friends who have frequented only AYCE Korean barbecue places. I told them that this place is not AYCE, but the quality of the meat and service is much better. The staff is extremely friendly, helpful and they remember you next time you come back. Within 10 minutes, this became my friends' favorite Korean restaurant. The typical Korean BBQ dishes like Bulgogi and Kalbi are very flavorful, but the favorite has to be the spicy barbecue pork and the tofu soup. You must order the spicy barbecue pork! We started out the meal with their tofu soup...this was a very pleasant surprise! To top off all the barbecue, the owner Richard, decided to give us a cheesecake and green tea ice cream dessert, for free! If my friends weren't hooked before, they are now! If you've spent your time only going to AYCE Korean BBQ place, try this place and you'll swear you've never tasted what good Korean barbecue really is supposed to taste like. This is the real deal. They have very reasonable prices and a great place for conversation. We ended up staying until they closed. Not once did they pressure us to leave, directly or indirectly. P.S. They have the best green tea ice cream I've ever tasted. Just go. Thank me later. Check out my name on the wall!

I am extremely thankful to have this place as a lunch option in Chatsworth, as there are no other Korean restaurants nearby (Northridge and Reseda have a few options though). The booths are roomy and comfy and the servers are very nice; I only wish there were a few more tasty options on the menu. The lunch special soondobu is what I come back for. The tofu is silky and the soup hot as you please. You have to fish around for the 2 or 3 bits of meat in the stew, and the stew is a bit oily on top, but I don't mind. It hits the spot when I have a spicy soup hankerin. The kimchi chigae does not taste good because the kimchi they use here tastes like the kind you buy from a big jar from the supermarket. The sul long tang looks milky and rich, but lacks in big beefy flavor. The galbi aint bad but the cuts have a low meat to fat ratio. The pan chan is the same every time - daikon, kimchi, bean sprouts and 2 veggie pagyeon pancakes - they used to give you steamed broccoli with thousand island but haven't in a while. FYI, in the soon do bu and galbi combo, the soon do bu comes in a small pot with no egg and no meat.

Closest thing to authentic Korean food you can find in the valley (at least in the Chatsworth area). I tried the tofu soup, kim-chi jigae, bbq dishes and even their special Korean pancakes. All of the above mentioned were on point in terms of my Korean food expertise. The prices were a little more expensive then K-town prices but that's to be expected when you're the only Korean restaurant in the city! Side dishes (banchan) are served with every meal as well. Definite recommend!

As a Korean-American, after moving out I rarely get the opportunity to eat korean food. Where I'm from, the closest thing we have to Korean food is the Asian aisle at the Calabasas Albertsons. Tack that onto living with 4 mexican-americans from oxnard and you have the absence of Korean food all together. So when a $50 gift certificate from restaurants.com gave me the opportunity to pig out, I capitalized. Brought 3 friends with me and ordered the following: Seafood pancake (2/10 wow, seriously the worst seafood pancake I have ever had. Thick, doughy, greasy, obviously frozen seafood (tiny freezer shrimp guys? really?), served without any dipping sauce. Bulgogi: (5/10 it was dry and lacked flavor. not bad, but portions were lacking. Dude seriously, stacking onions to make the pile look bigger?) LA kalbi: (6/10 lacked flavor, all together bleh) Spicy Squid (7/10 pretty decent, sauce tasted like it could use some zest) and the list goes on lackluster banchan, ID'd the shit out of me, but the parking wasn't too bad. I am actually becoming more and more unpleasant as I write this review. My non-korean friends describe Korean food as having a lot of zest and flavor. This place tasted like they dunk all their food in water right before their about the serve it. No zest, no flavor, but my friend didn't seem to mind (granted I was paying). I ordered my limit worth of food, but was told to order additional food- ended up ordering the limit and walked out of there with a $90 bill. WTF? How does that make sense? We could have drove down FRESH KOREAN BBQ (yea I said it) and got AYCE for $20 person with better food and service. And the server, holy smokes i almost forgot, our server was definitely in a bad mood. I mean, granted she looked like sully from Monsters INC., but G-D, you have a job to do, would it kill you to smile or how about not grimace every time you come over to our table. Skip this spot and head down the valley. Grandma kim, if you're reading this- don't try to dish out bull shit when there's competition right down the street. Up your game, people! No grandma's were hurt during this review, but that's because there were no Grandma's in sight (including at the restaurant). Grandma kim, you took advantage of me. I will be burning the 4 other Restaurants.com coupons to your establishment. At least the place was clean.

We found this place via Yelp and we're not disappointed. It's a 'Mom and Pop' type of restaurant with mixed furnishings. The servers are very friendly and attentive even when it's busy. The food delicious. We especially like the kimchi hot pot, boogagi and veggie pancakes....so yummy. We've been there several times now and are consistently happy with our dining experience.

I went there for dinner this week with 4 other girlfriends. I am used to going to Korea Town to have Korean BBQ so I was quite hesitant to go here, but my friend assured me that this place was good. The restaurant is ok size, but was very empty when I went, I think they had one party seated and it was 7:30pm. After we got there however, a few other groups came. This is not your typical Korean BBQ. You dont cook the food yourself. They have a normal menu that you would find at Korean restaurants, but its different in a way. You basically order what main dish you want (a hot pot or a beef/chicken/pork dish) which is a sizzing plate with the cooked meat on it and then they bring you the normal Korean sides (I think we had potato salad, marinated tofu, kimchi, bean sprouts and raddish). It also comes with a small soup and a small rice side. The guy who worked there at first was not nice, but he then later realized that he was being rude and apologized and even gave us free ice cream at the end. I am just used to Korean bbq places that bring out TONS of sides and keep re-filling them for free. He mentioned that they only bring one side of each for everyone to share (which is totally not enough) but then when we asked for re-fills, he gave them to us. The sides were very tasty an the meat was cooked well too and tasted yummy, The portion size was ok too. We all finished the meat we were served but we were all full. I would go back here again, but I just rather go to Korea Town where you can get a variety of meats and cook yourself and get more sides, but for the valley, this is a pretty good place. We each paid about $20.

Inexpensive, good ambiance, and good food. The service is friendly and considerate and really nice. The parking is easy, located in a shopping center that isn't too busy at night times. Whenever I need a quick fix for dinner that's as relaxed as I can get, I definitely stop by here on my way home.

The experience and food were okay, though I've had better before at this restaurant. I've heard they have new owners, so that might explain the difference. Pros: nice atmosphere, service, refill of side dishes on request Cons: food on the bland side, price I would go again but wouldn't go out off my way.

  • Jami L.

Korean BBQ that you don't cook yourself. Absolutely delicious in every way. They give you so much food you'll be stuff and still have leftovers. And their kimchi is just to die for. Go with a group, have everyone order something different and share. That's the best thing you can do here! The owners also gave us a new dessert they were trying out, completely free for 4 of us. It was like a sweet pancake with chocolate sauce.

I've been craving Korean BBQ for a weeks now and as I passed this place on Friday and read the reviews, I knew I had to try it. My bf and I would have eaten in the restaurant, but opted to take our food home since we still had quite a few errands to finish. The Order: -Vegetable Pancake -LA Galbi -Hot Tofu Pot Total: $38.00 (Technically, it was $37.27, but the guy just rounded up...I probably would have left the change, but it was odd he took it upon himself to keep it.) Now onto the food.... Despite, being ordered to go, the pancake was still crispy when we got home. The vegetables and potatoes were chunky and quite good with the sauce. I'd describe the sauce as a tangy soy sauce...not quite a ponzu, but more soy sauce with lemon juice. Overall, the pancake was good. A little greasy for my taste, but the sauce cut the grease. The galbi was good and the serving size was acceptable to share for two people. It wasn't earth-shattering, but it satiated my craving until I can eat my fill elsewhere. The order did come with a bowl of potato soup, good portion of rice (not the small container most places give), and the little appetizers plates (sprouts, noodles, kimchi, and potato salad.) The potato soup and appetizers were decent, but I would have liked a little more to choose from. When I ordered the Hot Tofu Pot, I was given the option of spicy-ness so I chose Medium since I wasn't sure their measure of hot. The medium was a little on the mild side, so I'll be sure to order hot next time. The flavor was alright, but I would have wanted a little more kick on the palate. The menu also stated there would be beef in the normal Hot Tofu Pot, but we didn't find any. This plate also came with a good helping of rice and the little appetizers. Overall, the place was good. I would have given the place 4 stars, but the price wasn't on par with the taste and portion sizes.

grandma kims is one of the best korean restaurants in the valley. don't be fooled by other peoples negative reviews. they didn't change management like some other review said. the owner always gets the best quality meat and the sides are always very good. also the owner and his wife are some of the nicest people you'll meet and always do anything to make sure you'll have the best experience while eating at G-Kims. they really know how to make you feel at home. GREAT FOOD!!! Update : grandma kims raised their prices and i just can't afford to spend $20 for a combo when i can go elsewhere and spend the same for all you can eat Korean bbq. Pretty disappointed because the food is good, but not for the price

So this place is close to home and its yummy! This place's name sounds like a family owned joint and that's how they treat you! They are so sweet and nice, the lady even taught me how to make steamed egg and some other dishes! The food has a home made feel to them and it taste good. I'm not an expert when it comes to Korean food. But when I need my fix, and don't want to drive to far, this is where I go. I enjoy the Kimchee Pancakes and their Tofu Soup =] Happy Eatings! =]

Oh Grandma Kim's, you never fail to satisfy me with your delicious korean dishes, great service, and oh too pleasing prices. The last time I was here I ordered the spicy tofu soup lunch special. It came with the typical fare of korean side dishes: pickled daikon, kim chi, potato salad, bean sprouts, and crispy vegetable tempura. I also ordered a small seafood pancake. They use a really good batter to make it- it was delicious. The spicy tofu soup had egg in it, topped with mushrooms, and sprinkled with green onion. Wowieee. I love love love their kimchi bibimbap! Extra beef please! :] Everything was amazing- and I was very satisfied. The girl that took my order was very helpful and super sweet. Expect me! I will be back soon. ;)

Came here for the first time Foods: Spicy Beef Soup (8.99) - big bowl (good for 2), small portion of meat, taste ok 2 in 1 BBQ Combo w/ LA Galbi & Spicy Pork Ribs (17.99) - pricey, portion small, taste ok, a lot of onion Sampler w/ seafood pancake & pan-friend dumpling (12.99 + 2.00) - pricey, taste ok, portion good According to the website we could get three appetizers for the price of $12.99+2.00 (if you order the seafood pancake), however, you could only get only TWO appetizers. Place is nice, relaxing, not too loud. Service was good.

The food is good but I think it's a bit overpriced. But then again, there's no competition since it's the only Korean restaurant in Canoga Park. I got the kimchi rice in the stone pot and it was really good. They give you a lot. But I don't think I would pay over $10 for this again. My bf got soon tofu which was about $10 and he liked it. The side dishes were all really good. It gets really got in this place too because the air conditioning doesn't circulate very well. But other than that, it's good overall! This is a place that you would go if you can't drive all the way to Koreatown for some quality Korean food at a cheap price but then again, this may be cheaper considering the gas prices these days.

I've been here twice now - both times with my family (mom, brother, bf). This is what I think of the place: - good Korean food - really easy to get to (huge parking lot - the sign is a little faded though) - good kim chi My mom likes to order the combo (she is a creature of habit and gets the jap chae and kim chi pancake) -- good stuff! I like the hot pot bi-bim-bap. And the neng-myun (cold noodles). Add some of the mustard and the vinegar to it, and bam, it's delicious. Get the neng-myun cut too, so it's easier to eat. Just FYI. Mmm what else, we had the mat-gu-li (alcohol). The strawberry is okay - but tastes like powder. The coconut is kind of even worse tasting. The passion fruit or guava was the best. =) It's $5 for one of those small little bottles. Yeah, our table gave them a lot of business! *.P I didn't find out until later, but they take coupons. Check out restaurant.com for some. There's a minimum amount you have to buy, but it's probably worth it! Mmm... just remembering it makes me go - Chal-mok-gos-sum-ni-da! ~ ^___^

This ain't your grandma's Korean restaurant..oh wait. Nevermind. Stopped by after a great time at Angeles Ranges gun range to grab some lunch with a couple of friends. Been here one other time also at lunch. We ordered the bulgogi lunch which includes assorted ban chan and rice. The kim chi is nicely fermented here. Can't stand new kim chi, the older the more flavorful. Bulgogi is pretty good but nothing to rave about. Had strawberry wine for the first time here. Not bad.

Sort of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant. I used to come here at least once a week, but their food consistency turned me off... so now I eat there once in a while. They had fantastic salad. The dressing was very unique and delicious. But they said they stopped serving that. So sad. I've been to a handful of Korean places and this one has great banchans: kimchi, beansprouts, potato salad, veggie pancake, pickled daikon, and some others I probably left out. I usually order the lunch combination: pork or chicken bbq (extra spicy hehe) + small kimchi hot pot. Can't go wrong. The interior is clean & has some type of nature/plant theme going on. Also, they play random music which is titillating; from Korean music to Disney LOL.

Wow just finishes eating...or Should I say escapes the roach fest. I been here total of three times, although it is over priced and the food quality is simply OK I can almost tolerate OK food and I don't play well with insects at my dinner table Good by forever

I was craving Korean food today and searched for a good one near me via Yelp. This place had consistently good ratings and people seemed to really enjoy this place a lot... however, I just came back from dinner there tonight and I probably will never go back to try it again a second time. My SO and I both ordered the Hot Tofu Pot and Galbi. I found the food to be average, not awesome and not awful, good enough to satisfy the craving. As for the banchan, I guess I've been spoiled by lots and lots of banchan during a meal and was fairly disappointed with getting 5 small portioned banchans. To top it off, in the middle of eating, a small cockroach was walking along the wall next to my seat. This is probably why they have a B rating. As a result of all that, I don't think I'll be coming back here :(

After readin all the good reviews, i decided to try this place out since it close to me. Food is "ok." nothing great. portions are kinda small which makes the food pricey. And for the ones who likes "Side" dishes, they only gave kimchi, potato salad, bean sprout, tiny portion of chap chae and pickled diakon. that was what they served when i ate there on 6/17/11. 2 stars for portion & side dishes prolly wont go back.

Very quiet and slow for a Saturday night. The table next to us was dirty and didn't get cleaned for the entire time we were there. Only one waitress was working at the time too which made everything slow. I ordered the regular bibimbab with tofu instead of beef and no egg, my friend ordered some beef thing that looked pretty good. Mine took forever to cool down and when it finally did it wasn't good. No real flavor, I had to add a lot of soy sauce and even then - the sides had more flavor. That's another thing, both of our meals were supposed to come with sides, but we only got one serving of sides. It would be better if they were unlimited. Service to get drink refills and the check took forever too. I'm glad we had a coupon for bogo or else I would have been very upset. I won't be coming back.

I walked into to this restaurant and felt very warm...it was very cozy inside...the food was great too, there were many side dishes like you would see in the movies...I don't eat beef but my friends said the bulgogi is AWESOME! Great family atmosphere, everyone was nice...service was great!

i got takeout here on a cold rainy day and they were fantastic! The food was really yummy, i got the brisket and the spicy pork bbq and it was so good. They packed up all the soups/sides the dinner usu comes with (which some places skimp you on) and the danjang chigae was amazing - soul warming deliciousness on such a gloomy evening. We also had the kimchee potato pancakes - yummy yummy!

Gma Kim's is awesome! Fortunately for my girlfriend and I we live pretty close to the restaurant. I'm not the experimental type simply because I love good food and fear the unknown possibilities of getting something terrible. Though I will admit that being close minded will surely prevent you from encountering amazing food. Gma's was somewhat of an experiment with wonderful results. It is one of my favorite restaurants. As I previously stated, I don't often experiment. I always order the spicy BBQ pork. I love all the sides it comes with including the hot potato soup, rice and all the amazing veggies. That is my recommendation. Spicy BBQ pork! If you love flavorful meat with great texture and the possible combination of mixing it with your veggies and rice, go with that. Oh and I must mention the pan fried dumplings, they're seriously amazing!

3 different sources have hyped up Grandma Kim's so I gave it a shot. I expected ethereal results but left with a hole in my wallet and still a linger of hunger... I walk in and feel like I'm in a restaurant I've once seen in a Japanese anime. In the middle there's a display for garlic cookers with prices so outrageous even Steve Jobs would do a double take. The side dishes are well, monotonous, lacking any soul that has already been sucked out by the interior decor. Their soon tofu is, pale and white, stingy on the contents and void of any heat or spice and priced in the range beyond even most Ktown restaurants. The bulgoki, empty of any depth or richness and again priced beyond their standards, really added salt to my already gangrene-wound. Perhaps Grandma Kim got a little too cocky with the influx of customers in the recent years, but her price hikes, frugal tactics and faceless food really put a damper on my expectations for a place with such a brilliant name.

It's not The Best Korean Food Ever but it's the best in the area. Which might not be saying much considering the area, but the food here is pretty darn good and solidly prepared. My family enjoys it regularly - and yes, we are Korean. My brother regularly orders daeji bulgogi (spicy pan-fried pork), my dad goes for the spicy seafood soup, and my mom usually goes for a spicy tofu soup. I tend to vary things a bit more but I usually get the mool naengmyun (cold noodles in a salty broth) and haemool pajun (savory pancake of seafood and scallions) combination. As you can see our tastes and choices differ but we all enjoy what we order. Extra points to the restaurant for: the good service; for offering mixed rice (brown rice mixed with sweet rice and beans, which is much healthier and more flavorful than white rice); and for the "clean" way their banchan and soups are prepared. Bad Korean restaurants often give you soups and banchan that are very "muddy" in flavor and texture and I use "clean" to describe food that is the opposite in nature. The weakest part of this place is the location - I don't mean the drive it takes to get there, I mean the fact that it looks like a spartan office situated in a shabby strip mall stuck in a city's deserted warehouse district. This is definitely a place you visit with your family or friends for a casual meal, not the place for impressing a hot date.

Oh. My God. I just happened to notice that they served Korean and were near where I work. So I phoned in an order (which they said would be ready in 10 min). They all say that, but it's never the case. Nonetheless, I arrived 10 minutes later, and there was my order! The service was very quick and friendly, and the food was AMAZING! AND the lunch portion was more than enough to fill me up. I will definitely be back. The only bad thing I can really say about this place is that they obviously don't do enough advertising. Why didn't I know about it before!?!

very friendly service and very delicious food! i used to live in tokyo and eat korean several times a week (my school was in korea town) + have been to korea 6 times, so this brought back some great memories. and of course, like all true korean places, trendy k-pop playing on the stereo, metal chopsticks, and metal rice containers, not to mention pictures on the walls of customers/friends and some soju advertisements. i got the bibimbap, and my friend had the barbeque chicken (despite my recommendation of galbi.) both very good. i only wish they had samgyopsal, possam, and jyajyamyon. but i mean even in korea you wouldnt find jyajyamyon and galbi in the same place, so no complaints! btw, sorry if my spelling is way off, i know how to say the names in korean and japanese, but never see them in english. (you know like, here they say barbeque short rib instead of galbi, and so on)

totally worth it! the husband and i had to drop off some borrowed books to our friend in northridge but we were starving too so we needed a good place to eat in the area. thanks to yelp, we discovered grandma kim's family diner. it is located in a random strip mall with plenty of parking. the food is very authentic and all of the dishes we ordered were good. from the nyang myen (cold noodles) to the beef knee soup to the steamed dumplings to the jap chae to the veggie pancakes to the kalbi (yes we ordered a feast!) -- all were very tasty and satisfying. plus the service was top notch. our waitress was so attentive and friendly. we must've asked her for multiple servings of the various pan chan dishes and she totally accomodated us. so if you ever find yourself in the northridge/canoga park neighborhood and crave korean grub then this is the place to go!

I've seen this place for a while now and decided to try it out for lunch one day. I've heard mixed reviews from friends so I wasn't too sure what to expect. We ordered jap chae, galbi and a tofu hot pot. The food was meh. The servers were pretty attentive so that is a plus. This place gets 3 stars because of its almost walking distance for me and I can get my Korean food fix without having to drive to downtown.

I went to this place almost 3 years ago and it was okay. (3-3.5 stars). I went back there with my friend because this place is close to our church and we were craving Korean food. I was very disappointed at mediocre food, a very slow and unfriendly service. I won't go back to this place anymore. This is my farewell to Grandma Kin's. PS: The owners changed? three years ago, they were very friendly and service was good.

I'm lovin' Grandma Kim's. It's not Koreatown, but it's pretty good for the valley. I know they get compared to BCD Tofu House, but being on the west side of the valley and close to my work. I come here for lunch and order the bulgogi beef or chicken. It comes with all the little Korean side dishes and a plate of rice & soup of the day. They also throw in a Korean newspaper. I have no idea on how to read Korean but like the gesture. I also order the kimchi jigae from time to time, which is really good. So, this place is worth a try.

My friend Kim (no relation to the grandma) and I used to come to this place quite often when we worked in Woodland Hills. I'm not even remotely Korean, so I'm definitely not an expert on Korean food, but my nephew has a Korean grandmother who used to make me big jars of kimchi when I was a teenager so I have been eating it for a while and I love it. I'm not even going to attempt to use the original names of anything though. Grandma Kim's is not the best Korean food I've had, but it is the best I've had in this part of the valley. The barbecue is decent but I would always order the tofu hot pot, which I think they do exceptionally well. They offer it in mild, medium, and hot, and I would always get it in medium. It arrives at the table bubbling hot and comes with a raw egg (which cooks in the broth so you have to crack it as soon as you get your food), and a serving of perfect rice in a little covered metal container. You also get the customary plethora of sides, which always worked out well for me and Kim because I would eat all the spicier ones and she would keep the mild or sweet ones. We would fight over the pancake (they don't have it as an included side every day) but they would gladly bring out more upon request. The seafood pancake is delicious, and as big as a large pizza. I'm partial to the kimchi pancake, although it's probably a heart attack waiting to happen. The service is friendly, the prices are moderate, and the place is clean and pleasant. Man, now I'm craving Grandma Kim's tofu hot pot, which really sucks because I'm in Burbank and it's almost midnight.

We had lunch here today with the family. It's been awhile for me to have Korean food and boy do I miss it. It was the first Korean experience for the GF and she was impressed. This place is very good and the service and attention is A1.

Not bad but not great. I would rather make the drive to BCD Tofu. The tofu was tasty, but the portions were small. I was not full after my meal. The veggie pancake was tasteless, and they only gave you 4 side dies while BCD gives you 6 to 8. Their side dishes weren't that good either, which is the main reason I like Korean food. I also like how BCD does the rice in the stone pot. The food wasn't bad, and the service was decent, but I'm not sure I want to go back.

Real Korean food this far from Koreatown? Yes, it's true. And it's the first Korean place that's served kim chi I actually thought was tasty. The pan chan may in fact be my favorite in L.A. (See my pic of the bean sprouts, kim chi, spicy bamboo shoots, and vegetable pancake pieces.) Also recommended: the pan-fried dumplings bursting with juice.

Kimchi Chige!! I love you so much!!!! Its so good. Grandma Kim's is a hidden gem. It's so far away for me but I will still drive there to eat food. I like Grandma Kim's because its not just BBQ and its not just Tofu. Its both and they have pancakes and noodles and everything is so good. Plenty of parking, great prices, nice staff, I love it.

Lovely place, mom and pop feel but still has the dreaded b-button for service. You will seldom use it, staff is pretty attentive. There are a number of very good lunch combinations, bulgogi, spicy pork, spicy chicken, short ribs etc. The standard sides of kim chi or acorn jelly or bean sprouts are served with rice and soup. As is standard in most Korean BBQ places spicy is quite spicy so be careful what you ask for when you ask for spicy. Ample parking up front.

I could be wrong here but, we bought bbq combination with hotpot for dinner and our korean bbq combo only had 5 pcs. Are we suppose to get refills on those? I loved the hot pot, pleny tofu, soft and very tasty. but man... i guess i've tasted wayy better and seen more food. anyway, we paid and left and went to Shik Do Rak in northridge and paid $20 less with more significant amount of food. And yes, we finished our 2nd meal, that's how insignificant the amount of meat in Granda Kims. Hope I'm wrong.

Great little spot. Doesn't look like much from the stripmall exterior but inside is nice, simple, clean with a little character. I had never been to a Korean restaurant but I thought it was great. The Boolkogi is enough to split. It comes with potato soup, Kim Chi (pickled cabbage), radishes, bean sprouts and other goodies. We also tried the fried and steamed dumplings (4.99 for five). They were really fresh and hot. (We liked the fried better as the steamed fell apart a little bit.) Enjoy!

super friendly service. they basically babysit our baby when we come here. love it. food is good, though a little overpriced. definitely the place to go if you're in the mood for some korean food but not in the mood for driving to K town. Support this little family joint!

First things first: this is not the place to take a date you're trying to impress. It's very clean, front and back, but it's not exacly Woo Lae Oak (NY or LA). That aside, Grandma Kim's is a great family-style, family-owned restaurant with friendly, attentive staff and a wide range of BBQ, tasty homemade soups, dumplings, and vegetable & seafood pancakes. They're generous with the banchan (side dishes) and the Galbi always satisfy. Accepts credit cards. Open 'til 9:30; Closed Sunday.

Grandma Kims is awesome! I finally got to check it out after passing it so many times when in the area. I know, you're thinking why would I have had the opportunuty to pass it so many times, because why would anyone be in the Canoga Park area, ever... I dont think G'ma Kim was actually there, but the lady who served us was fantastic. It ran about $30 a head, including beer (Obi!!!); so its not super cheap but it was sooo much food, typical kbbq fashion. Ian got the combo, that is served with choice of meat and a hot pot soup of choice, for $17 I believe. I chose the eel after some debate; I'm a huge eel fan, but I've found it can be risky. If its not good eel, then its quite bad and almost unbearable to eat. Fortunately this was not the case; this eel was bomb to the last bite! We started with a kimchee pancake appetizer; so yum!! I love kimchee in any form!! And of course the meal was accompanied with all the usual refillable side dishes. The difference here was that each table did not come equipped with its own bbq to cook the meat; its all served, which is fine really; less work. In the future I look forward to maybe ordering their hot pot soups take out, until we dine in there again.

After passing this spot time and time again I finally had to give this place a try. I'm glad i did. Now I have not eaten too much Korean food so I don't consider myself an expert. I do know what I like however and this place is good. I had their pan fried dumplings which were very tasty. I also ate some of the BBQ and it was so good. The portions sizes were decent and service was good. They have service buttons on the tables which I have never seen before. I pressed it a couple of times and the waitress kept coming over. I figured out and had a laugh with the waitress. All in all it was a very good experience. I will be going back.

Grandma kims is the most delicious Korean BBQ I have yet to taste. The food always comes out nice and hot which is a must for me. The meat is always tender and very tasty. To top off the great tasting food, the service is impecable. They are so eager to please and make it a joy to dine there. One time the owner felt like he was not paying enough attention to us (which was not the case) that he gave us free dessert. This is defintely a place my boyfriend and I will be frequenting.

I usu. go to BCD cuz I love the fried fish they serve with banchan. However whenever I go here, it's pretty good as well. The prices are indeed a bit steeper than BCD. But I don't have to drive very far, so I guess i'm saving on time and gas.

Tasty and Serviceable Korean BBQ for the Valley. Host served us some pretty interesting extra's as we told them it was our first time. Definitely seemed to be quite authentic. The Seafood Pancake was by far the best item we ordered.

Sorry, I am Korean and I have to disagree with all of the five stars here. I just tried this place for lunch. I don't need atmosphere, and this place has none, but I do need good food, and again, this place fell way short. My family and I try out Korean restaurants by ordering several staple dishes. So we ordered, Kalbi, naengmyun, fried mandoo, and their signature kimchee chigae. Kalbi was fatty, way too sweet. Naengmyun was straight out of a package! Noodles were soggy (naengmyun is supposed to be so chewy, you almost choke trying to eat the noodles), broth way too sweet and bland, really awful, probably the worst I ever had at a restaurant. Fried mandoo came out swimming in grease. The Kimchee chigae would have gotten this place two stars, except it did not come out hot, it was bubbling on the sides but the kimchee and pork ribs in the middle were luke warm. Tasted okay, but it has to be bubbling hot!!! Service was really bad as well, only one lady handling the entire restaurant, including being the bus boy. Our rice looked like it was day old and reheated. Definitely won't go back. Pine Tree and Maroo are so much better (though they are way short of L.A.'s Chosun Galbee, the BEST korean restaurant period.)

This is a mom and pop restaurant, with great food and great service! The green salad is to die for! I am a true salad monster and can eat up to 3 platefuls of their green salad. Their carrot dressing is amazing! As for the rest of the menu, I've only had the galbi, which is very good with the grilled onions.

ok i have to leave a review for this place for my K PEEPS who crave korean food in the valley. it is a good place for lunch. it does feel like home cooking - since for a restaurant, they could do a little better with their banchan. nothing fancy - plain.. quite wholesome taste. so the verdict is SAFE! u won't leave here sad for consuming wasteful calories. i would give it 5 stars in the valley, 2 in ktown, and 4 in the westside - overall 4~

  • Aj P.

I will revise this review, but here's a quick take after a lunch at this place. Had the galbi with soon tofu - I always think this is a good first dish for local Korean eateries. The food was very tasty, and the portion was medium to small - which is really pretty large when all the banchan and rice is counted in. If the quality of meat was a little more chewy in the right way and the banchan had a bit more range, I could mistake this place for a favorite joint in Koreatown.

I have spent a number of years down in Korea town and think I have been spoiled by really good food. Grandma Kim's is good. It is not great. I think the problem is consistency of quality. Sometimes the dishes are close to spot on...say the Galbi, or the Boolkogi - and other times the flavor isn't quite there...or worse a bit dry or even bland. The banchan (side dishes) are a bit weak in variety. The gimchi tends to be good and relatively spicey...but the other items are not stand out quality. However they are good at offering more banchan :) The service itself is usually good - sometimes really good (depends who is on staff). Atmosphere-wise, well, I'm not too keen on the whole diner look...but it could be worse. The music on the other hand is a bit odd...I've heard pop to country. At any rate, it's a decent place for Korean food at this end of the valley. There certainly is better in Los Angeles.

  • Lena H.

i love this place among others of course. i order their spicey chicken soup with no chicken. funny huh, but they make it how i want it, because sometimes i just don't want chicken! everything else in the soup is absolutely perfect! their baked garlic is so good i bought the ceramic garlic baker for my mom. no smell and very bland taste. very yummy and good for you. just don't get carried away. my mom ate 3 bulbs in one night and the next day my dad told her she stunk! lol

I like Grandma Kim's......great food in a cute little restaurant. Recently moved back to the Valley after 5 years in Santa Monica, where my girlfriend and I were spoiled with all the K-BBQ & ramen places on Sawtelle. Grandma Kim's is a few minutes away from our new place, so we decided to stop in one night and it was well worth it. Food is excellent! Bulgogi is tasty and cooked perfectly. The shortribs are always good quality and not too fatty. The spicy chicken is amaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing.......flavored just right, and spicy but not burn your tongue off hot. Ramen is also very, very good, with thick cut noodles and flavorful broth. We've eaten here twice and picked up take-out twice, and my girlfriend and I have both been very satisfied all four times. My only quip (and it's a small one) is the prices.....the meat portions on the entrees & combinations are normal prices for KBBQ, but the prices are a few dollars higher than most other places I've been too, and those places are on the Westside (so one would think even more expensive!) I would expect either a few dollars shaved off the menu prices (on meat entree & combination plates), or up the meat portions. Other than that, everything is great at Grandma Kim's Family Diner, and I'll definitely be back here in the near future for some ramen, short ribs & spicy chicken!

I thought pointing was a universal language!? I pointed to the combination meal I wanted on the menu. Instead I got two separate meals at full price and didn't realize until I got the bill. All they said was "sorry"..... Take your business to the Galleria or Korea town. The food was obviously pre-cooked and thrown on a hot plate. Waitress I had while nice didn't seem to understand anything I said .... I love korean food but I rather drive the distance to get better quality at the correct price shown.

This is a great family business. The BBQ items that they have on their menu will get the job done when fulfilling those cravings. They also have veggie items and great hot pots. I love their seafood and hot tofu pot. The flavor profiles go way past ten with this wonderful food choice. The portions are generous as well as the great service they provide. They make sure that your needs are met and you are satisfied with your hunger needs. Parking is a non issue as you can park in their lot.

Only thing preventing a 5 star rating is the high prices. The LA galbi and bulgoogi were delicious,. service was fast and restaurant was clean.

'Twas very pleased with every item I had off of the menu. My boyfriend and I came here because he previously had their food and was impressed. The service was warm and the atmosphere was pleasant. Before leaving, we asked for a Take-out menu and they were out of them: alllll but one. The owner insisted we take it, and we are happy we did. Delicious food, how can you go wrong?

Huge assortment of hot pots and soup bowls. Wife and I came in here to finally try this place - there was only one other couple here. We only saw one person in the front and she came up to the table with menus and promptly left. She came back a few minutes later and mumbled something but I assume she saw that we were looking at the menus and immediately turned around. So much for drinks. Nay! Okay, so 10 mins has passed and I finally wave her down to bring us to sodas. Aaaacck - canned soda - so that means "no refills for you!". I hate paying $2 for a can of coke knowing that you sure better slowly sip that puppy throughout the next 60 mins or pay for another one just because it's 100 degrees outside, 80 degrees inside the restaurant and you might be a little parched? Nay! She comes over a few minutes later with the sides (I guess?) - anyway, loved them all and we munched those down well before lunch even arrived. She was gracious enough to give us a few more bowls of the side dishes. Yay! The food took another ten minutes or so. I ended up with the Kimchi Beef Hot Pot - there's a reason they call it a hot pot - I could barely get any food down because I couldn't get the food to cool off! LOL, I'm not complaining about that as I would not be happy with lukewarm food. Anyway, good spices, nice little burn on the kimchi but very light on the meat. If I had to guess there was not more than 2-3 ounces of beef mixed in with the kimchi. Spices were right on though. Meh! Once we got our meals, the front hostess/server did not acknowledge us again until we were done eating and waving her down for the frickin check. She had 2-3 to-go orders come in while the patrons waited in the booths so I can understand being a little busy, but by then we were the ONLY other customers. Even though we waved and spoke up as she came in and out of the kitchen, we were just invisible. I finally got up and walked over to her and asked for the check. She appeared to start writing it up and then a customer walked in .... squirrel !!! She totally forgot about what she was doing and I had to get up once again and then she finished us up. Nay!!! Lost of food choices - the food was very tasty - lunch prices are the ticket as dinner's a bit overpriced - restaurant temp was about 10 degrees to warm - service sucked. Unfortunately with all the choices in the valley to eat, this won't be one place I'll be coming back to very soon.

I love the consistency of the food. However, they are skimping on the amount and quantity of appetizers they initially give but you can ask for more. I go here with the same person and we always get the BiBim Bop Hot pot and the seafood tofu. It's all so good. We tell ourselves that we need to order something else but we never do.

Very friendly service!! The seafood pancake is amazing!! As well as the spicy pork and super tender short ribs. The kim chi is so good and seasoned very well. We're definitely coming back! It's one of our new favorite places.

Let's start with restaurant... Floor dirty, tables a little sticky and well menus looked like they have never been clean. Not to mention we found what could be a small cockroach in one condiment dish. I am not scare since, I have eaten around the world but, I have to admit this was not cool man. I have fortitude so, I still decided to order my wife however, was not happy camper. Too my dismay food was not much better dumplings over cooked practically burnt, vegetable bibimbap was bland, rice was not crispy and over done with vinegar. Reason 2 stars was chicken special was good and vegetable pancake was very good. That's all folks. I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone. Sorry.....

OMG, thank goodness for this place. Totally satiated my appetite for Korean food. My mom & I went here for lunch on a recommendation from my car insurance agent. This is some serious food. Perfect portion size. I ate all of my food, which is rare. But, I was incredibly hungry & still on CST. The beef kalbi was very delish & full of flavor. The beef was quite tender. The potato soup was something I have never seen before. And sooooo good. My mom got the pork bulgogi & japchae. Both incredibly delish. The banchan was what surprised me & made me even love this place more. The pickled radish was sliced thin & very very yummy. I will soooo come back here to try more things. And I love the fact that it's super close to my home. Service was wonderful. Food came out in a timely manner. We didn't have to wait long for the food.

  • Renuka A.

The food here is really good. I got the bulgogi hot pot and it was delicious. The side dishes were also really good. The reason why I gave three stars is because the waiters barely checked on us. It wasn't busy at all either. But when they did come the one time to check on us there weren't rude or anything so that was nice. I would come back here with my family.

  • Ryan S.

Came on Saturday around 1pm, surprisingly no one was there. Prices are steep unless you come during the week for lunch. The BBQ spicy pork was good, and the chicken kabob was very good. I'd come again with their specials during the week, but not worth it for their dinner entree prices.

The Service: Family business, hands on operator. The owners are always in the restaurant, taking orders and serving customers. Good customer service. They give good recommendation on the menu. The Food: We tried the combination for $16.99. Selection of one BBQ meat and one non-meat dish. Also serve steam rice, potato soup and several Korean side dishes. Very good value and lots of food. Boolgogi + vegetable pancake - Good portion of the meat. Good marinate sauce. Big piece of vegetable pancake. Spicy BBQ Pork + steam dumpling - BBQ pork is very flavorful. Wish the meat is a little bit bigger piece. Steam dumpling can also substitute to pan fried dumpling. Housemade dumpling, only meat inside, no vegetable like Chinese dumpling. Will definitely come back and try out different dishes on the menu. Very authentic Korean food. The Parking: Plaza parking (free). Always have parking space available.

I thought I already would've posted this review, this was an amazing restaurant find on accident. I love this place the, food was super good. I'd never been this kind of restaurant before so I asked the waiter, who turned out to be I think the owner, what I should eat, and I just I'm so happy I did. it came out so good the food was amazing. that potato soup is bomb. We will be back here. They even stayed open late for us. Wonderful wonderful service and people, well lit, cute diner, loved it!!!!

I was here tonight... def a place for home cooking. Service was good... it was about 5pm so there were only about 3 parties. It was about $16 for a combo and I ordered spicy bbq pork (very tasty) and a kimchi pancake (very greasy and thick if you like that.) The sides were a bit bland and less than I'm used to. My sister ordered the short ribs (very flavorful) and the seafood pancake which you had to pay extra for. My suggestion would be to remove the shrimp shell because it was not a tasty surprise to get that crunchy feeling!

    (3)
  • Lorena V.

Ive driven by this place several times... I finally gave it a shot. The inside of this location is pretty small. Not good for a big party. The service sucks! The service needs a little improvement. There was literally 3 parties inside the restaurant and they still didn't manage to check on our table. My glass of water was empty for about 8 minutes, before, I had to approach someone for more. The food portions are good, they just put way too much onions at the bottom of the plate and not a lot of meat. The flavor to the food is really good and enjoyable. The side portions for 3 people was really small. A little pricey. I rather spend my money on a unlimited all you eat place. Please improve your service a little. I been already more than 3 times and things haven't change.

Awesome Korean food. Quick service. It's usually around $20.00 average per person. Prices are a little on the higher side but the taste of the food truly make every cent worth it. If you want to go cheap, their lunch combo menu is a steal!

Came here with my brother and Dad to celebrate Mother's Day. Good customer service and nommy food! Classic smorgasbord of appetizers- including radish which I hadn't tried before. I ordered the Bulgogi Hot Pot- generous portion and super delicious. I love Bulgogi and it was flavorful and tender- glass noodles are a plus! Dad ordered the Bulgogi BBQ- comes sizzling hot, over onions. My dad can be picky but he loved it. Brother ordered Bibimbap Hot Pot and he finished it. I definitely want to come back to try more, especially their pancake options I hear are delicious!

Came here on a Sunday night, my cousin lives close by and we were in the mood for some Korean BBQ. Although not your typical KBBQ place it met my expectations. Got the combination plate with Spicy Chicken and Short Ribs. Food is brought out to you on steaming plate along with a bowl of white rice and all the Korean BBQ essentials. Tried my friends food and everything tasted great. Would definitely come back here if im in the area or would recommend it to anyone.

    (4)
  • Jerry L.

Grandma Kim's is not a KBBQ. I found it nice that my order of Galbi was cooked in the kitchen rather than at the table. You and your clothes are not saturated with bbq flavor. SO ordered the bim bim bop - she said the rice wasn't quite crispy on the bottom. Drinks - hot tea and iced green tea. Free refills on the iced green tea almost made it worth the $2.99 they charge - you have to drink about 10 of them to get your money's worth I think. Also ordered pan fried noodle with shrimp. There's only a few pieces of shrimp. Don't think the up charge of $2.99 is worth it. This place is pricier than most korean restaurants I've been too, but it's what I expect for the valley.

  • Hans S.

This place is another one of those "moms" that cook for you when you're hungry. Parking lot is available and this place isn't usually too crowded, so it's nice for a getaway place. We ordered galbi and the seafood pancake. It was quite nice! Lots of food for the two of us and it was quite filling. Finishing the food was quite a task. Service was friendly and did not feel rushed. Attention was given to us when needed. Can't say much else for this place besides that it's the typical staple-Korean food that you crave for at times.

Love this place for lunch. Quick service and great food. The usual side dishes of kim-chi, marinated sprouts, bamboo and potato salad are a nice accompaniment. I always get the hot tofu pot (with egg) and BBQ chicken plate... Again, quick, easy and delicious. I eat here once a month if I can.

A good family run business...I wouldn't be surprised if Grandma was in the kitchen. We had the bulgogi and chicken breast with the traditional sides...comes out to your table sizzling....but not the same as when you bbq on your own tabletop...it was decent though...comes with a cup of soup and rice as well. Decor could use some help...parking a breeze.

Ambiance: family style restaurant, spacious inside Service: short on staff, very slow Food: just ok Banchan - ** limited items, pancake and potato salad tasted ok Boolgogi - ** over sweet, meat was too dry Spicy seafood Bibimbab hot pot - *** shrimp and squid, average taste Hot tofu pot - *** soft tofu average taste Price: over-priced comparing with other similar Korean restaurant, expect $25 each for dinner

My favorite Korean place, the dinners are pretty large for what you pay., the side dishes are all tasty and it was fun trying the ones I had no idea what they were. The Kim Chee is a favorite.. The Staff was helpful and kind... Certainly a "must go" when you want something different from Chinese or Japanese food

Finally! Good quality Korean food in the valley! I love Korean food but would always have to rely on making trips to Koreatown to get decent Korean eatery. I found this place on yelp and I was very pleased. I always get the seafood pancake, fried tofu, and spicy rice cake. My mouth is watering talking about it! Staff is alway very nice and welcoming also.

Passing by this place for for the past few years, I knew I would try it one day. Still seeing that it was open and finding it come up on some searches for nearby Korean food, it seemed like a nice bet. The only problem is that one of my main cravings for Korean food consists of Yukgaejang (spicy beef soup). It cost almost $10 and it seems a fair enough price but it was not worth half of it. The broth wasn't flavorful at all and of course I did not expect to find gosari (fernbrake) or toran (taro stems) in the soup, I was even more surprised at the lack of green onions in there and how mushy they were. It wasn't done very well at all and I wouldn't try that here again. We also ordered their spicy chicken skewers. Four skewers cost $15. I thought that was a bit pricey, although it was very tasty.

I've been coming here for lunch for years. Very friendly service, always have lots of parking. Clean environment and great customer service. I usually get the lunch specials under $11 dolars and the food is great. Love there side dishes and great selection on beers as well. Mom and pop restaurant with great service support small businesses!

I really enjoyed this place and was completely pleasantly surprised! I've driven by this place so many times and while I've been meaning to try it, I just never actually had, so when my Pumpkie picked it out to try for dinner on a cold night, I was excited! When we first walked in, the first thing I noticed was how amazing the place smelled! It smelled so good and really whetted my appetite. The walls are a bit traditional Korean BBQ-like (with the wood paneling) as well as adorned with menus with writing on them (ie. how much people love the food) and pictures of regular customers. I also noticed a couple posters of Park Shin Hye - hahaha! They first brought out the banchan, which was also delicious! The usual stuff, like kimchi, spiced beansprouts, potato salad (which was so good! - and better than the other places I've had it), pickled radish and these amazing cold glass noodles. They were sooooo good! I could have eaten just those and been happy. They were really delicious! There was a wide variety of foods to try, but I decided on the Boolgogi hot pot (since I was cold and wanted something really hot to warm me up!) and was so glad that I did! The bowl came out sizzling and so hot and with a raw egg (in which you mix it in with the broth), some mushrooms and an abundance of glass noodles in the bottom of the bowl. The broth itself was the perfect amount of sweet and savory and I was really impressed by the meat, itself. The meat was juicy and tender, as well as well-seasoned and flavored, and seemed to be really good quality. It wasn't at all tough or fatty and I felt like there was a good prorportion of it to the soup. :) I was really impressed with the dish and it was really filling. The Pumpkie got the Bibimbap, which I always thought I hated. I've had it at a few other places and it was always served too hot I guess, where the rice was basically burnt to the bottom of the bowl. I had a taste of Pumpkie's and it seemed absolutely perfect. The perfect amount of spice (although I'm sure he added a bit of spiciness to it) and just the perfect amount of slight crispiness to the rice, similar to a "Tadig". I would definitely try this myself next time. Also, the service was very fast and friendly. There were a couple other people in there when we first got there but it must have been a slow night. The owner seemed to be very friendly and shared some Korean food wisdom with us. I liked that and he brought us some more of those tasty glass noodles! Yum! Overall, the food was great and I'm definitely looking forward to going back and trying some more goodies!

We've only been for lunch and usually get a tofu soup, bibimbop or the spicy chicken. The service is quick, the food is good and the prices and portions are reasonable.

Came in here after driving by a couple of times. Ordered the bibimbap hot pot and the boolgogi ramen to split between 3. The portions are quite large but the food was still slightly overpriced, especially since the serving of meat on both dishes was very small. Over all the food was okay but not exactly worth the prices.

Went here once and now I totally promote this place as my new yet another Korean spot. It is family owned. They are friendly and the service was great. The food is authentic and tasty. I am glad I gave this place a try! ;)

Stopped by here on a Saturday night to grab dinner on our way back from Solvang. It was packed just enough for a good vibe but not too busy for good service. Food here is made more for non-Korean palate, as certain foods were a little on the sweeter side. But everything was good and I'd go back if I'm ever in the neighborhood again.

It's like eating at your Korean grandmother's home. This is a family owned restaurant. I'm pretty sure I saw both mom and dad...and maybe their daughter working in the restaurant. The food is authentic Korean food. Here are the must haves: -seafood pancake (so crispy and tasty with a nice dipping sauce) -bibim bop hot pot -both bulgogi and Galbi were good (it's cooked in the back kitchen) This is not your Korean BBQ where you cook at the table. It's like going to a Korean family's home to have dinner. I liked the low key diner atmosphere too. I liked everything, but did not care for the BiBim Naeingmun (spicy buck wheat noodles). It was okay, but the sauce was prepared differently than I am used to, not my favorite. I will definitely be back for Korean grandma cooking though. A thumbs up. By the way, after we arrived around 7:30pm on a Sunday, the place really got filled up.

This is the real deal Korean food. Great meat dishes and side orders. Everything about the appetizers and side orders written previously (including dumplings and kimchi pancakes) are true. Highly recommended.

I couldn't be happier to have a solid Korean place in Chatsworth. It is Chatsworth, after all, not some cultural melting pot of kimchi, injera, soba, or any other ethnic edibles. So I was stoked to have Korean, good Korean! I am spoiled by k-town Korean food and was looking forward to similar deliciousness. The menu had me apprehensive due to how impressively large it was which is never a great sign for me at ethnic places as it doesn't speak to a specialty. Well, once I finally selected my dish, it turned out that a large portion of the menu was no longer available because, well, it's Chatsworth and Chatsworth doesn't order cold noodles, or black cod, or anything that essentially isn't kbbq. Shame on you Chatsworth. So I got the rice cakes and my husband got the spicy squid and both were delicious and top notch. The owner is a lovely man who lamented the loss of authentic food and even reminisced the whitewashing of k-town which is still a major thing. I truly hope that whitey adapts to unfamiliar flavors instead of wonderful dishes disappearing due to unseasoned palates.

Came here around 8:40 and was craving Korean BBQ. Order the Boogulgi and Spicy BBQ pork. Everything was excellent and the meat was cooked perfectly. Only complaint, I wish there was bigger side dishes and rice portions.

I love Korean food, and I was finally happy to find a Korean food place in the valley without having to go to Korea Town to eat...I ordered the bimbibop, and luckily I went straight home...because out of nowhere I defecated on myself I've eaten in several different countries and I NEVER had this happen to me! Luckily I had no vomiting or fever...but I stayed home the rest of the day and threw away my pants :/

Came here once last year and it was just ok but we didn't come back since we had to ask for an egg for our tofu soup. They reluctantly gave it to us but we can tell that they were not happy we asked. Other restaurants normally comes with an egg for each tofu soup without us even asking. This year, I got a coupon so we decided to give this place a shot again. Oh boy, we regretted it. Once again we had to ask for an egg for our tofu soup and they said, "no, you don't get an egg since it's not a large enough soup". They could've suggested it's $1 extra or something instead of just refusing us an egg. We bought 3 dishes with one of them being free with the coupon and it still ended up costing us way more than if we went to other Korean restaurant and order 3 dishes without a coupon. So we definitely will NOT come back again.

Don't be fooled by the decor or the fact that it's in freaking canoga park. The food is fantastic. The wonton/tofu cheegae is super flavorful and took me back home. My husband is in LOVE with the spicy pork - they char it just enough to get that smoky flavor but not dry. The banchan is ok, the rice was a little dense but the main courses more than make up for it. We will be back FOR SURE. (Freaking canoga park!)

I had some unused credit from Restaurant.com that we decided to redeem at Grandma Kim's. It was a $25 off a $40 purchase, which seemed like a good deal, but I was afraid two of us wouldn't be able to buy $40 worth of food. (This includes a mandatory 18% gratuity.) To start off with, parking is pretty easy; the restaurant is located in a strip mall and is basically the only restaurant/business that has customers in it at night time. The place is really quaint and they were pretty fast at seating us, though the place seems pretty understaffed. The menu, though on the pricier side, has an extensive choice of dishes. We got the combo bulgogi with a noodle soup and the galbi. The noodle soup was huge; it could easily be it's own meal. It was pretty tasty and came out super hot. The bulgogi was also good; I think they size down the meat portion with the combos. The galbi was also very tasty, but was served on a huge bed of onions, which I found unnecessary. It was a good portion, but I think it was overpriced at around $13-16. We also got an appetizer of the fried dumplings, which were super delicious! Service was a little slow, but I think they were understaffed and the restaurant was really full. Great to finally visit a Korean Restaurant in the valley!

I've been here more than a couple dozen times so I can't believe I haven't left a review yet. This place is great for lunch and it is small and quiet for an introvert like myself. The staff is friendly and always available and the food everything you expect from a Korean home cooked meal.

This was my 3rd visit to Grandma Kim, and just like the days of my youth, I was excited to go see Grandma! You know how Grandma cooks such delicious comfort food? Well that's exactly what you get here. Delicious, home made Korean food. My wife and I split a BBQ combo, half spicy pork, half LA short ribs (my personal favorite). The meats were cooked perfectly and of course, you can't forget about all the sides! It's a good thing this place is not all you can eat, otherwise I would most likely be here everyday, and most likely be a lot heavier! Adopt me Grandma Kim, I want to be your long lost Filipino grandson so you can spoil me with such delicious food!

What a wonderful place, great service, great food, I found my new Korean Restaurant. The place is pretty outdated but the food and the service makes up for it. Really enjoyed the spicy chicken, beef dumplings and the spicy veggie ramen. Will definitely be back.

I came here just last Friday night since driving out to Koreatown was quite a commute coming from the Valley. So I yelp and found this place nearby. Pricing wasn't too bad, however service was nice also. Not sure if he was the owner who had took the order, but he was polite.

I've always had a great experience at Grandma Kim's. You are greeted within seconds you step foot in the restaurant, grab whichever table you desire, food orders are taken as soon as you are ready and dishes fly out of the kitchen- hot food hot, cold food cold! From my pictures posted you can tell I'm a fan of their Hot Pot/Bimbimbap-boolkgogi- soup in a hot pot/bowl with a nice portion of thinly cut meat (boolkgogi), savory broth, clear noodles with raw egg that cooks in seconds with a few stirs. Hot Pots are served with a side of rice and 5 bachan (sides): kimchi, tofu, bean sprouts, clear noodles and potato. I love coming here and supporting their family run business, they work hard here and it shows. There's rave reviews about their food and service that line the restaurants walls, mine included! I always leave here a little buzzed from a cold Hite or 2 and always with a full and happy stomach. Cheers!

Well, well I finally got the chance to try this establishment out. I can't lie, I came here once with my Fiance and we both said naaaa. But this time it was different. I met with a girlfriend at 6pm on a friday. We were the first one's there. But after like 30 minutes the place started to get busy!! We ordered the Combo plate which offers the deal! You get a pancake of your choice and a small potato type broth soup. ( It was delish) I chose the short ribs and it was pretty filling for me! The Kimchi Pancake was good and so was the Seafood Pancake. The Ribs were good except I now understand what people meant about the pile of onions underneath the meat, but seems to be a problem at most Korean restaurants. lol Otherwise, I loved it!! I will be returning and enjoying other items on their menu! WHY CAN'T ALL KOREAN RESTAURANTS SERVE..., Ddukbokkie!! I can never pronounce it right either!!!haha

We've been here a few times now and each time the food is great, service is top notch and there's never a wait and food is brought out quickly. When we first went here I think there were a few bad reviews that had brought this place down but we found them to be totally unjustified. I think the owner is there most of the time and he's super friendly and knowledgeable about all his food. We had a friend that was gluten intolerant and he knew exactly which dishes and sauces had gluten in them! He also makes great suggestions on drinks and food and just seems like a really nice guy. I'd definitely recommend heading there for some good Korean BBQ.

the diner is located in a strip mall, and it is a diner type of ambience. Clean, but basic, the atmosphere is simply one of a strip mall diner that said, the food was excellent! Not the least expensive Korean fare but not the most extensive either, I think it was priced fair and both me and my dining companion were both pleased with our food. Service was courteous but not very attentive, I had to remedy my need for more napkins and water myself. Not a dealer breaker simply because the food out shined the flaws in the service. I certainly will return. So many items I wish to try on their menu.

Great place! I came in last week because I had arrived 2hrs early for my appointment at the school next door an I had not had any breakfast. I've always heard good things about Korean BBQ so I thought now would be a great time to try it. I had no clue what I was looking at so my waitress recommended something for me. Can't remember the name of the dish. The place got busy pretty quick considering the time of day and the service remained constant which was nice. The decor is relaxing and the ambiance is soothing. I'll probably be back next week with a friend.

We discovered this hidden restaurant through restaurant coupon then decided to try it out. Since then we've been coming back couple of times. First thing you'll notice when you come in is the very homie ambiance. Sits were very comfy. And as for the food they do have enormous menu selection for a small restaurant. We've always ordered the fried seafood pancakes it's one of their signature recipe and not to mention their endless choices of noodles with different variety. We're still discovering some of their food here but so far it was an excellent dinning experience.

Was craving for Korean food and have always passed by this place and decided to check it out. Casual atmosphere with plenty of booths. Located in a plaza, with plenty of parking, northeast of Topanga Cyn Blvd. and Schoenborn St. Service was okay and a lil slow at getting our order. Ordered and enjoyed their: 1. Combo Hot Tofu Pot (hot & spicy tofu soup with beef, kimchi, seafood, onions, and egg topped with green onions and mushrooms). The hubby ordered it extra spicy, was flavorful and the tofu was very fresh; served with Korean side dishes and steamed rice for $13.99 2. L.A. Galbi (Grilled BBQ beef short ribs) served with Korean side dishes, potato soup and steamed rice for $15.99; beef was flavorful and came out in about 10 pieces on a bed of grilled onions, potato soup was good but only came with one piece of potato in a very small bowl :( Lil pricey for the amount of food you get. The sides dishes (clear noodles, bean sprouts, kim chi, potato, daikon?) were good, light and were not salty at all.

3 stars is about right. they cook it themselves so it's not an uber korean bbq where you smell like bbq post dinner. the freebie dishes are so-so. i dig the scallion pancake. the rest are standard issue. tip: they have plum wine that is not on the list. get the: pork or beef bbq meat. skip: the garlic shrimp (shriveled mess) service is spotty. the bar back runs away for any questions. the folks are hit or miss. i never like to order anything kosher on the menu so i say what i want and say charge me whatever you want kind of person. so got both the pan fried dumplings and the steamed ones. the pan fried are way better. crispy and not oily. the steamed ones needed more flavoring.

I was really hesitant to try this place but I have to admit when I'm wrong and boy oh boy, was I wrong. My family cannot wait to head back here for dinner! We tried some BBQ chicken, meat dishes, kimchi, seafood noodle soup and a few of the different pancakes. Every single bite was delicious, amazing, tasty and flavorful! They even replenished the side dishes a few times. This is a must try!!! Hands down one of the best places to eat in the valley! It's really casual and not fancy so don't expect much for decor or ambience. But, the food is phenomenal!

Family owned restaurant and family atmosphere. I ordered the small seafood pancake as an appetizer which was cut into 4 generous pieces. Ordered a combo with LA BBQ short ribs and the tofu hot pot. Their medium flavor is pretty spicy but so delicious.

Love love love Grandma Kim's. My favorite weekday lunch spot. If only I could convince my coworkers to come here with me more than once every couple of weeks. Great selection of sides and fantastic lunch specials. I get the bbq chicken lunch special with noodles on the side. The portions are big and there's always enough to take home for later. I've gotten take out here before too. They skimp out on the sides for to-go orders, so make sure to ask for extra in advance.

Been here about 4 or 5 times and have never been let down with there delicious food although and sadly I can't say the same thing about there service. Every time I come here I always have to get up and get up and reach out to the server/owner. Very uncomfortable feeling for most not me though when you have to raise your voice to call a server to your table. It seems like it was just one lady for the whole restaurant. Other than that the food is great and tasty. A makeover in the customer service will earn them a 5 star in my book. A.)-PROS 1. Galbi beef ribs(delicious) 2. They sell beer and alcohol mixed drinks also good. 3.spicy chicken (pretty good) B.)- CONS 1.service 2.service 2. I don't think I need to say it again but service they need to improve there checking in on every table. They have a buzzer button to call in server but it doesn't work or else this place would have got my 5 star rating.

Love this little restaurant. Whenever we come here we always get the galbi and jap chae. The workers are really nice and they ask you if you need anything all the time. The food is amazing. I think it's one of the best Korean cuisine I've had and we don't have to go to Ktown just to eat a great grub of Korean food.

Good food! But a bit pricey... I've only had the takeout here. Fist of all, I could not understand the lady on the phone. I think she said, "hello".. But I had to ask her if it was Grandma Kim's. Anyway, I had the Bulgogi and dumpling soup. Both were great and tasted authentic! The takeouts come with the side dishes so that was a plus. About the price.. Lunch specials had great pricing so that's why I decided to call in and get some take out. I saw a menu online that showed the lunch special ends at 3pm. My food was picked up at 2:30, but apparently the lunch special had ended and I was charged dinner pricing. I would recommend this place for some K-BBQ... For lunch (which has decent pricing, just make sure it doesn't end earlier than you expect).

This place was much better than I expected. The banchan is always a tell if a restaurant is going to be a good Korean restaurant and this place was as good as it gets! I had the boolgogi hot pot and it was delicious! My husband had the bibimbap and he enjoyed it. Bathroom was dirty is only complaint.

  • Marie Q.

We got a full order of seafood pancakes which was more than enough for 2. We also ordered a half/half order of spicy chicken and bulgogi. They gave like 5 sides of banchan which I thought was quite minim. Just bean sprouts, mashed potato, kimchi, pickled zucchini, and pickled okra. I asked for multigrain rice but they don't have any. The BBQ was ok.

  • Ashley D.

The food was delicious, but a bit overpriced. I enjoyed my experience there. The service was great! The woman that helped me and my family was very friendly. The sides they had were great and the BBQ I ordered was so good. I will definitely be coming back when I'm in the area.

I'm familiar w a few Korean dishes; this place has some semblance of Korean but it is as Korean as Taco Bell is to the Mexican cuisine. The kimchi here is not real. And I discovered a new type of spicy beef soup I have never tasted in my life. Interesting. I'd give 2 stars on food but service was impeccable. These folks are stingy w portions. I paid $2 extra for beef -- got about 50% of what I'd get normally from Hodori. I'm compelled to write, bc someone wrote a comment on the wall saying this is the "beat Korea food"--hardly.... Unless of course u think Taco Bell is standard American food.

Great Korean restaurant in the valley. I live on the westside, but I've been going down to Canoga Park quite often b/c I love the huge mall there. But when I make a choice to do this, I have to forgo Korean food since I will not hit up Ktown in the same day. Thankfully we found this spot and I'm looking forward to returning to check out more dishes. I had the doganitang, fried fish and seafood pancake. All three were delicious and the side dishes also yummy. Service was attentive and warm. They seem to have a lot of regulars and are very friendly to their guests.

Love it!!!!! Galbi to tofu hot pot. X they are delish!!! And their spicy sauce is so darn good!! Remember to ask for it... The one thing I will say is the tofu hot pot was WAY too spicy this time .. I think they forgot to asks bout the spice level but my oh my.... Good Galbi and great sweet spicy sauce

Food is good, not a standout but considering it's in the valley I can't complain since I don't have to drive all the way out to K-town. It's not cheap, but that's normal for Korean hotpot, and you get quite a bit of food. May come again if in the area and craving Korean food.

I used to think that the West Valley was a wasteland of mini-maul, chain restaurants and bereft of good food. While I still mostly believe that, I've discovered the north end of the West Valley is truly bereft of good restaurants. What I am finding though is the truly local little hole in the wall family owned places are where you want to go. I found Grandma KIm's doing a search for Korean BBQ on Yelp and was heartened to see that it had four stars and lots of reviews. I've found that hole in the wall Korean BBQ restaurants are the ONLY way to go when you want authentic eats. Grandma didn't disappoint. We were greeted warmly by the staff. It was relatively quiet when we arrived. Over in the corner there was a group who looked to include several of the family members of the owner...kinda the Korean Mafia of West Hills....what, what!!! The booths have the bounciest seats I've ever sat in and we spent a good five minutes getting our bounce on before we even looked at the menus. After ordering some really cheap, bad saki, we got busy with the menus. Looked like we had to have the Bibimbab which is a hotpot with all kinds of veggies and rice with an over easy egg on top. One down...one to go. We also ordered the Korean BBQ with beef which comes with several plates of various side dishes. There was Kimchi (of course), a potato salad type thing, soybean sprouts, and some other unidentifiable dishes which were interesting, but tasty. The BBQ also comes with rice and potato soup. The food was really good and plentiful. Be warned, the Korean BBQ dishes....especially the spicy ones are like lava...both physically and chemically. Your mouth will be on fire from beginning to end, especially if you venture into Korean hot sauce land. By the time we left, the place was hopping with locals...Korean and non-Korean alike. We've been there four times this month. YUM.

It's pretty hard to find good, authentic asian food out in the Woodland Hills and surrounding area. Found this place on Yelp a few weeks back so I decided to drag some co-workers along and give it a try for dinner. It did not disappoint. We got the vegetable pajeon ("pancake"), and it was yummy. Maybe not the best pajeon I've ever had, but it was good. I got a combo with the BBQ Short Ribs and dwaenjang chiggae. The ribs were tasty, but the chiggae could have been a bit spicier. That's pretty much the only knock I have on the food here. Definitely planning on coming back in the future.

LA Trip Winter 2013 Ordered half tofu soup half short ribs lunch combo. Damn damn damn, short ribs came a sizzlin. Tofu soup and an egg came a bublin. A little Westernized cause one of the kimchi dishes was potato salad, but I loves me some potato salad, so I'm not complaining.

This place was pretty good! I give it a 3 star because I've only been here once by my self and only tried one dish. It was a bit difficult to choose an item considering it was my first time eating Korean food. I would love it if the waitress would have spoken more English so that she could have helped me understand the dishes better. Over all, the staff was welcoming, the place looked clean and I would definitely come back to try some more and see if they can fully qualify for a 5star.

Horrible. I had the bibimbap. Asked for no meat as I am vegetarian. There were still bits of beef that I spent about 10 minutes picking out. The bibimbap was greasy, soggy, salty, and was not very good. There was a puddle of sesame oil when I was finished! I believe they might have a problem with cross contamination as well from the beef that I mentioned before as I had a horrible case of diarrhea. The other people in my party were not feeling well. Warning for non Asian people! If there are absolutely no Asian people there, don't eat there! There is a reason why Korean people don't go to certain Korean restaurants.

I'm a total Korean newb. I went to a "Korean" place one time on St. Mark's Place that turned out to be... just... really bad Chinese fraught with the ever-present canned mushrooms that Manhattan unexplainably loves. Super weird. Only time Yelp has led me astray. Kind of been scared of Korean ever since... well Grandma Kim's changed all that! The owner/manager/server (?) was quiet, but attentive and respectful. At no point did I feel out of place or judged for my obvious how-the-hell-do-I-eat-this maneuvers. The hot pots are delicious and dumplings are freakin' awesome. As every person who's had Korean food ever has already said, the little side dishes are the best. The metal chopsticks will be the death of me. I kind of have the feeling there is better Korean out there, but this place is just fine for me. And they have smoothies!

We've been driving past this place for years and just now decided to try it after seeing good ratings. I lived in Korea when I was younger and love Bimbimbap. Their Hot Pot Bimbimbap was delicious and hot until the last bite. My husband got the combo bbq and loved it too. All the little side dishes were delicious. The service was great -- they checked on us often.

Great dining experience! $40 for three people is good for several plates and 3 drinks. I'm hooked. Ordered the beef and it came on a sizzling plate with onions. The hot sauce they bring is so much better than the store bought stuff they put on the table. I won't mention the name but it has a picture of a rooster and rhymes with miracha. Don't use that! Use the stuff in the little squeeze bottle they bring out-incredible flavor! The stuff in the pictures look good and taste better. We went in for lunch and there was no wait cause they have a fairly decent size dining room. Love the decor, very comfy. They kept bringing out little sides that I found out are part of what you order. Sides like kimchi, potato salad, potato soup, something with tofu and other things that I believe they brought out cause my friend spoke Korean to the lady. All in all, for the amount of food we ordered, $40 was outstanding. I love flavor, spice and quality. The best part is that they have all of those components with a good budget in mind! Check it out, I think you'll like it.

Food was average and the service was lacking. Portions were meh. So, spending 10 years in the Army I've learned what good Korean food is and this was lacking.

First time last night. Friendly, fast service and delicious food! We ordered the chicken skewers, spicy pork, and boolbogi- all yummy! Sides of kimchi pancake, kimchi hotpot, and pan fried beef dumplings were awesome! (Dip the pancake into the kimchi hotpot sauce!) Great prices for a lot of food! The Gangnum-style guy on the placemats was a plus! Also cool manga-like drawings by customers on the walls. I didn't take pictures- was too busy devouring the food! Will be back!!! Cool find in da deep valley!

I LOVE Grandma Kim's. The people that work there are personable. On two different occasions I've had nice little food convos with them and they were always very pleasant. The food is always good. I always order a lot!!! This time I ordered the combo with boolgolgi, kimchi hot pot and the veggie pancakes with some Hite beers :) that was happy Korean food goodness right there. There are no minus' to this place. None at all. I've been here twice in a few months so they must be doing something right!!!

This place had lousy food, improved, then went south again. The yukgaejang was horrendous. No flavor and a lack of much in the way of vegetables that should be in it. The naeng myun broth was lacking in flavor as well. All in all a disappointment and with Shik Do Rak nearby and Koreatown not all that far away, there is no reason to return.

I haven't really had much korean BBQ except for two other places. But it didn't really wow me, the food wasn't bad just I was taken. The atmosphere of the place is pretty nice and clean. The services is pretty good, our waitress was very attentive when we needed something. As for the food, well it wasn't great just about average. I think what I enjoyed the most had to been the seafood pancakes. Its pretty delicious especially since it has onion in it and generally I stay away from anything with onion. Overall the place was not bad, it's good for lunch or dinner. The prices here are pretty cheap especially if you go during lunch. There are not many KBBQ places in the valley but this one will do fine.

Delicious and fresh Korean food at it's best. The service is friendly and quick and they refill side dishes as they run out. The food had just the right flavor and was not at all heavy. Would definitely recommend the seafood pancake.

I love this place. I love Korean food...particulary the chop chae with beef and steamed dumplings, which are pretty much the only things I ever eat there and when I go to my Mother-in-Law's house. Their Bulgogi is good too - but like I said...I love the chop chae. This is a great little restaurant, when my daughter was younger, I would take her with us when we went out to eat and they would make sure to accomodate us by giving us an area in back in case I needed to nurse her, so I could have a little privacy. We recently had my husband's birthday dinner here, and once again, they were great - they gave us the area in the back and let us eat and hang out for 2hours and some change. Half of our friends had never had Korean food and they all really enjoyed the appetizers, food and Hite beer. We ordered all sorts of stuff, and then they helped us out with serving stuff for the birthday cake we had brought - my husband said he was hoping for a rice cake birthday cake - maybe next year - he got a Fallout New Vegas one this year instead. LOL!!

It was ok, nothing great. The first server we had may have been the granddaughter that was probably forced to work there - she wasnt too happy! The 2nd server must have told her to leave(?) but he was really nice. It's a bit pricey I think for the area and the food. The food was ok, we may go back since they are close by.

Me and my man popped in here for lunch yesterday and really enjoyed it. The place is quaint even if a little out of the way. The lunches were very reasonably priced and the food was generous. All the Korean veggie appetizers that come with lunch were delicious. I had the BBQ Pork and he had the Bulgogi and we shared everything. All was delicious and filling and the staff were polite and attentive. We'll definitely come back.

I was really disappointed with this place, after reading all the awesome reviews I was expecting a party in my mouth. I ordered the boolgogo (bbq beef) combo with dumplings, the bbq plate was soo small, and the dumplings did not have any flavor. Osaka on Devonshire has way better bbq beef, I would go there more often if they weren't so slow! sad :( AND..their plates or bigger. The place itself is pretty dingy, there were flies around our food and a thin layer of grease on our table. The portions were so disappointing, bleh. Prob won't go again.

"Grandma Kim's provides traditional Korean dishes in a friendly atmosphere, great for first-timers to Korean cuisine" My wife lived in Korea for years as a child. One side effect of this is an undying love for Korean food and culture that, until recently, I had been unfamiliar with. Having a distinctly 'Mi Gook" (American) palate, some of the dishes my wife introduced me to were not only unfamiliar, but downright frightening. In my inexperience, I gave unfair attributes to Korean cuisine that needed adjustment. For those of you out there that are new to Korean cuisine and want to avoid the mistakes I made, Grandma Kim's is a good place to start. From the welcoming smiles to the well prepared food, even the most skeptical diner will find something delicious to ease the appetite. First things first, Korean dinners are served with a couple of items by default. Think of it as the Korean equivalent to 'chips n' salsa'...aka Ban Chan. Though you won't find any deep fried tortillas here, after ordering don't be surprised when your server brings you 6-8 small plates of different Kim Chi (pickled cabbage or radish). Korea is known as "the Land of the Rising Kim Chi" so the importance of Ban Chan and Kim Chi cannot be overstressed. The Ban Chan dishes that were served at Grandma Kim's were tasty, and of good quality. My wife and I enjoyed them while drinking Korean Barley tea (BoriCha) which is served complimentary with your order, just ask. As an appetizer, I ordered Kim Chi and Vegetable Pancakes and my wife the Tofu Hot Pot. Don't let the idea of 'pancakes for dinner' scare you, with the mix of what seemed like tempura batter and KimChi\Veggies, the end result is a distant cousin of EggFooYoung. The KimChi\Vegetable pancakes had a great texture and flavor, with the Kim Chi version being a bit spicier than the Vegetable. The dipping sauce was a good addition to the flavor, but not required as the pancakes held their own in the flavor\texture department. My wifes Tofu Hot Pot was sizzling hot and colorful. Adorned with fresh veggies and sticky rice, it must have been good because I never got a chance to take my customary 'reviewers bite' before my wife ate the whole thing. After the appetizers, we ordered 2 large Sapporo beers, 24oz served in the bottle with a 5 oz glass. I'm not familiar with Korean brews, so I played it safe with Sapporo, an "Ole' Faithful'" of sorts. The dinner menu at Grandma Kim's is extensive. Traditional Korean items, large BBQ plates that are perfect for groups, and combination dinners offered welcome variety. My wife ordered the BoolKogi (beef rib meat) and I the Grilled Salmon. As we talked over our brews, the aroma coming from the kitchen was enticing, and actually stopped the conversation at one point, "Something smells good!". What we were smelling was the BoolKogi my wife had ordered. When it arrived, the plate was again sizzling hot. The beef was mouth watering, tender, sliced thin and seasoned well. My wife made no effort to restrain herself, she was reliving her youth in Korea right before my eyes... The salmon dish I ordered gets 5 stars. Though on paper the dish would seem a simple one, in practice it delivered a lot more flavor than I ever expected, and ringed of Cal-fusion cuisine. Aside from the salmon being cooked to a perfect tenderness that easily broke apart with my fork, the real magic was in the sauce that was paired with it. A sweet fruit infused sauce that played like piano keys on my palate, leaving hints of pear and Lychee fruit for me to savor. I would go back to Grandma Kim's for this dish alone, as it was a memorable one. The salmon was served with seared mixed veggies, lightly panned with soy sauce. The flavor contrast between the sweet Salmon and the soy-sauced veggies was a welcome one, and helped to complete this already inspiring dish. Housed in a shopping center in Canoga Park, the location does leave something to be desired, however. Not because Canoga Park isn't home to a number of well placed restaurants, it seemed to me that Grandma Kim's was a bit outside of the mainstream 'dining district'. Also, the local shops and regional decor in the area didn't present any excitement, were uninteresting and dirty, snubbing any ideas of a romantic post-dinner walk. This in contrast to the dining room at Grandma Kim's, which was both visually enticing and clean, I couldn't say the same for the surrounding area. The prices at Grandma Kim's seemed higher when compared to the large number of Korean restaurants in the area offering similar dishes for $2-$4 less. Though still reasonably priced, it is a consideration when on a tight budget and eating with a large party. I would suggest Grandma Kim's to anyone that wants to enjoy the cuisine of Korea, but doesn't know where to start. The combination of Korean favorites and their unique (albeit limited) take on Cal-fusion would bring me back for dinner, and bring my wife back for memories of Korea. Enjoy!

I love everything about this place - great food and friendly service. Everything I have tried there has been fabulous. It's hard to pick a favorite, but these are some highlights: - Seafood pancake appetizer - tasty and large. If you have a few people, it's worth getting to share. If you are there alone or with just one other person, it is essentially a meal by itself. - Kimchi soup - absolutely delicious. I tried it once on a whim and loved it enough to have it the other times I've been to this restaurant. Great flavor, not too rich... just a perfect meal choice if you like kimchi. - Bulgogi - The BBQed meat and chicken is delicious. Great flavor. - Dolsit bim bap - This is very good. I don't know if it is the best bim bap bowl I have ever had, but it is a great choice if you like it. The customary small dishes are all good, too. In addition to the quality food, I've really liked the service. This seems like a small, family run business and the employees all take the time and care to nurture the family business.

This strip mall restaurant is easy to pass by but once you stop in you'll be coming back for more. The owners are very nice and helpful when ordering from the menu the first time. Be sure to try the seafood pancake (or any pancake really) and a few of the different dishes that come in the hot pot. You can't go wrong. The portions are generous and the price is right. They also have a table side buzzer that you can hit whenever you need anything. You really gotta go!

Perhaps my taste buds have changed, but the food didn't taste as good as I last remembered. We were so bummed to hear that the cold noodles were not available. We were looking forward to it. Instead, we ordered 4 combos (2 galbi+hot tofu, bbq chicken+jap chae, and bulgogi+jap chae), 2 seafood pancakes, and regular japchae. The galbi combo only came with 5 pieces of galbi so we ordered another regular galbi, which came with 10 pieces. Everything tasted mediocre this time, but the seafood pancake was still good. They take restaurant.com gift certificates so it's great for a large party.

I came into this restaurant because its so close to my house and I am always looking around for some great food spots. I walked in with my friend and there were only two other parties eating. Granted it was about 2 hours from closing, I expected a little more people to be eating. The restaurant is a cute little place that seats a good number of people. The walls are lined with menus and pictures of guests that loved the place. The food itself was great. I had the bulgogi or boolgogi (as it is spelled on their menu and my friend had the kalbi or galbi. I don't remember how to spell it. They brought out the side dishes and those were delicious as well. We had bean sprouts, tofu, kimchi, and some potato-type soup. All in all, the food was delish! The price might be a little high compared to a place like Hodori in LA but being close to my house, I'm going to be a regular here. I love me some Korean BBQ!!!

If i can't make it out to K-Town this is the place for Korean BBQ. Service is great. Quality food. Obviously if you want real Korean BBQ go to K-town, but if you are in the Valley then stop by Grandma Kim's

Food is pretty good although the portion was somewhat small. I had the BBQ spare ribs lunch special. Service was horrible. The waitress was unattentive and was seated at a table busy chattiing with a friend the whole time. My guess is she's probably the owner.

Disclaimer: I'm white, so you probably shouldn't listen to me. Grandma Kim's is the best Korean restaurant in the Valley that I've been too. The staff are very nice, the food is fresh and delicious. Above all, it's consistent. The kimchi is the same every time I go there. In fact, all the banchan are consistently delicious. The kalguksu is especially wonderful.

I love this place! My husband and I started coming to place when I was pregnant and now we are coming here with our 2 1/2 years old daughter. The food is awesome and service is great. I love the mid-aged waitress lady who has been waiting us there for years now. She is slways super friendly and even remembers what our favorite dishes are. Their korean bbq are the best in the whole valley area and their fried dumplings are the must-try. They have a few authentic korean dishes that remind me of my mom's home-made dishes.

for some who might toss Korean food in the same category as, say....Thai food or Chinese food. in my experience, the latter tend to have strong flavors throughout, which is not a bad thing, it just their style. but those styles are not comparable to Korean food because they are just different styles. the food here at Grandma Kim's literally tastes like someone's Korean grandma is in the back slaving away in front of the fire just for you! let me explain. the flavors of the foods served here have a subtle, light flavor that might not be noticeable if you haven't really had lots and lots of Korean food, like almost everyday for most of your memorable life? i can really taste the care that had been taken to get the seasonings and marination (for the BBQ) just right. basically, i think they have their recipes down to a science here. they might not win any culinary competitions or contests for innovative Korean dishes, but they do make Korean food that is just really good. although i just spent all this time talking about subtle flavors and tradition, my favorite item to order here is the Spicy Chicken Skewers, which are not subtle or traditional at all. haha. for me this is a winner here, but pretty much everything else is good too. of all the Korean restaurants i've frequented in the Valley, this place has to take the spot as my favorite. they don't cut any corners in providing really good quality food.

    (5)
  • The Immature A.

If you are Korean, or a Korean food lover, Grandma Kim's will hit the spot. If you're a meat and potatoes loving American idiot, like me, who thinks Orange Chicken is an authentic Asian dish, you'll probably be hoping GRANDPA Kim has some pizza in the back. While you're waiting to find out, a glass of lemon soju will do the trick. Perfect for what it is with friendly service.

Excellent food that we weren't expecting up in the valley. We were going to a concert nearby and saw this. If we ever were in Canoga Park against looking for eats, we'd be sure to consider Grandma Kim's. My wife was pleased with what she ordered, but the real winner was my "traditional" pork and kimchi soup. It was hot and huge, with large chunks of pork ribs that melted in your mouth. I wasn't able to finish it all, so it made a nice leftover a few days later.

  • link c.

Brought mom here for a hot bowl of tofu soup on a cold night. She got the Kim-chi and whole pork hot pot and thought it was really good - not bad for her first time with Kim-chi. It came milder than I expected (I've had some spicy hot pot) and the Kim-chi needed to be cut with a scissors right at the table by our server, which was fun. I got the standard galbi and hot tofu soup combo. I was not disappointed. Even the little things that every Korean place brings out as meal accompaniments were tasty. Staff was very friendly to us, a pair of extremely not-Korean clientele. Plus a half star for being all the way out in the west valley. Plus a half star for the show tunes soundtrack. Doesn't get much better than Julie Andrews singing The Sound of Music for atmosphere while eating Korean food in SFV. LOL.

I don't like to say bad things about restaurants but here I have to warn you guys, it is Terrible !... the kimchee had no taste, the poultry was almost raw, and no taste neither! and the hot pot was just a bad soup ... Add to this that this place is not cheap ( very expensive for the quality)... Don't go there if you like Korean food ; you would be extremely disappointed.

First dinner in our 01/11 L.A. trip, Grandma Kim's. My first time here was actually my first acquaintance with authentic korean food. It was a good introduction, we were presented with a bunch of 'appetizers' typical of korean restaurants. I can't really name them but they were all good. On my first time there we got a lot of sizzling plates; bulkogi, spicy pork, ribs and chicken, and they were really delicious. On our trip though I tried some other stuff like seafood pancake, fried fish and tofu soup. I'm glad that they haven't change and still have the same quality as they had 5 years ago. And like before, they still have good customer service.

This lil mom-and-pop Korean restaurant exceeded my expectations (I didn't have many expectations to begin with anyway). No fancy decor here, it's just a laid back kinda place to relax and eat good food with good company. The hot bibimbop stone pot is pretty solid and satisfies. That salad with the carrot-onion-vinegar-radish sauce is tasty as well. The odorless, not-so-garlic-tasting, baked garlic is an interesting one. I wish their kimchee were spicier though. The waitresses were nice and made us feel right at home. I will come back here again if I'm in the neighborhood.

I must admit, I've had better Korean food, it's good enough to satisfy a hungry stomach but since this is the only Korean BBQ in Canoga Park and it's located a walking distance from our home. What makes this place an excellent place is because of their customer service ethics is so professional. We always come back because of their excellent service. We're always greeted with the smile and they always attend to us. My children loves the chicken noodle soup here. Jialen says " I love Grandma Kim :)" If my children are happy, I am Happy.

Bear in mind that I am not Korean so I cannot attest to the authenticity of Grandma Kim's but I can say that it was damn good. The spicy was really spicy and the Korean bbq was delicious. On a strange note, they were playing country music over the speakers but I won't hold it against them. Super friendly staff.

  • Jesse F.

lol, Grandma Kim's. My Korean friend takes me here one day and I ordered the naengmyeon (I read the hanja as 'reimen,' of course). The lady looks at me and says, "You aren't gonna like that, order something else." So I was like, "No, that's what I want." And she was like, "No really, you aren't gonna like it." I start feeling all discriminated against and insist on it. She sighs and eventually brings me the noodles. And wouldn't you know it, I didn't like 'em. Who woulda thunk... But I went again and again, and from the gyoza (mandu?) to the tofu nabe (jjigae?) to the BBQ (galbi?), it's all really delicious. Plus they have lunch specials and don't mind when my wife and I share. And the banchan seems pretty awesome. Definitely a fav!

Nice place to feed your Korean food cravings, especially if you live in the West San Fernando Valley. We used to trek to Northridge until I found Grandma Kim's on Yelp. The bulgogi and Kalbi are tasty, the panchan is decent, the kimchi is ok, not great. We get the seafood pancake which is cut into halves and served on a long platter with tasty dipping sauce. The service is good and there are usually a mix of Koreans and non-Korean dining in there. For my family of 5 it is usually over $100 for dinner. No cheap date!

I've lived in Chatsworth for 2 years & never stopped in this place....until now.Thank goodness I did! I've actually come in twice within the last month! The food was absolutely delicious! There is so much to choose from which makes it so hard to decide which item looks better. The first time I came in, I went for the regular entree items & decided on the L.A galbi short ribs, while my friend got her favorite bulgogi. They brought out our potato soup first, then all the yummy Korean side dishes: kimchi, potato salad, bean sprouts, daikon, & kimchi pancake. The meat was served on a sizzling plate & looked soooo good. Believe me when I say it was :p. They also have combination plates that come with your entree and your choice of appetizer or soup, which is what I ordered during my 2nd visit here. I couldn't get away from the L.A galbi but my friend ordered the spicy pork. Also VERY GOOD! The one to take my order both times was the person who I believe is the owner. He's a very nice guy and made sure our food came out promptly. There's not to many good Korean Bbq places out here in the valley but this is one place everyone should try. Guaranteed to turn into one of your fave spots. Enjoy!
